The leaves are thin but it reminds me a bit of Basket Plant (Callisia fragrans) I wonder if it could be a variety of Callisia or possibly Tradescantia? Hope someone comes along with an ID soon, I'm always curious about the identity of plants!

My 1st thought was C. fragrans too, but I'm not sure either, doesn't seem quite right for that. Maybe another pic?

It's hard to tell without a picture of the whole plant, but to me it looks like one of the reed stemmed Epidendrums.

Betsy: Can you post another photo from a little farther away, showing the entire plant as Carol suggested? I hadn't thought of a reed stemmed Epidendrum and I guess that could be a possibility. I couldn't find any photo's in our plant database but while googling I found this one for comparison: http://www.flickr.com/photos/b...

I think I might have a reed stemmed Epidendrum in a pot out on my deck; tomorrow I'll go out and check and take a picture. Mine doesn't have a tag so I'm not certain what orchid it actually is. I purchased it at a plant sale last year and the lady just said it was a Florida Orchid, LOL.

Here's another view - she is bent over so had to hold her up.
Thumb of 2014-02-19/piksihk/a182f1 What do y'all think?

The leaves have fallen off from the bottom half. I've googled the reed stemmed Epidendrums and she does resemble them.

I certainly think it's a reed stemmed epi. The question is ~~~ which one? Maybe when it blooms, you will be able to ID it.

BTW, when I lived in Zone 10 in Fl. I had the one I gave the link for. It was planted right in the ground. It had some shade but plenty of hot sun. After establishing, it took drought like a champ & withstood a couple 20 degree nights we had during a freak cold front.

Thanks for the thumbs, but it could still be some other type of plant. I have two different species of Epis that have that have lived outside for many years. That is why I suggested that. The leaves on your plant do appear to be thin in the photos. Do they bend at all or are they ridged? The mature leaves on mine will only bend a little if I am very careful. Not paper thin.

It does look like a Reed stemmed Epidendrum. I just went outside and took a picture of mine that I thought was the same thing but my plant looks to have thicker, shorter leaves:

Carol, they are lovely!! Can you tell me about the third photo, the ones weighted down with rocks? Are they cuttings that will take root? I broke a piece off of my one and only Epidendrum radicans when I was out working on the deck today and it would be great if I could root it!!

Those are kikis. Same as prolifs on a daylily. They grow a new plant on an established cane, complete with roots. When the roots get a few inches long you can either carefully pry them off or cut the cane below, and start a new plant. My son's SO got a pot with 2 colors in it, and I want a pink one, so I asked for a kiki. I wont know if I got the pink or another orange one until it blooms. Neither one of the kids are plant people. Hilarious! I'm starting it in Spagnum.

Duh (slapping my head here) Green Grin! I've had a few orchids grow kiki's in the past ... those in your photo were so large, it never occurred to me that they were kiki's. *Blush*
