I have a few of those, but actually lost a lot when the bed they were in was flooded for too long when they were in hibernation. There are a few hardy souls tho still growing. We use them mainly just for snipping for baked potatoes, etc.
Does anyone grow the Tohono O'odham onions?
I like to buy onion sets in the Fall to stagger plant thruout the winter. They make bigger "store size" green onions. Only I didn't get any last Fall, so we are really missing them.

Harold,
Where did you pick the Tohono O'odham onions up at?
The ones I gave to Dan and the gang are the I'itoi's Onion that Native Seed/Search has.

Native seed search has one of their research farms down here near Patagonia, I have seen onions growing there, but I have never seen anyone around to ask questions.

Hello Ray - I bought a gallon pot of the Tohono O'odham onions at a Master Gardener sale over on E. Broadway several years ago. I've given away tons of them, even sent some to an onion collector back east.
Are the I'itol's different? I'll have to google both names.
My multiplying onions I got from a Valley of the Sun Men's Garden Club member years and years ago. (It's no longer a men's garden club - that's how long ago - the ladies have taken it over.) Never had a name for those onions. They just look as prolific as those Dann showed.

Harold,
I just did a google search and one of the first items listed was a post you made over on DG.
http://davesgarden.com/communi...
I think the Tohono and the I'itoi's are the same onion.
Mine Look identical to the one in the picture and they are the ones I gave to Dan.
Do your Tohono's bunch?
How about flowering? The ones Dan and I have rarely flower and die back in the summer but come back during the cooler months.
Does it sound like yours?

I'm a little slow. I need to go get another cup of coffee.
The title of your thread is Tohono O'odham I'itoi onions.
We are all on the same page here.

I just googled I'itol Onions. (pronounced "e-toy")
What came back is these onions were introduced to the Tohono O'odham native Americans around 1700. They, the Tohono's, who were accomplished farmers, grew them along the Gila and Salt Rivers with great success.

The Slow Food Movement has red listed them as endangered. The author of the article I read said that they have an over the top complex flavor.... (I know that I like them).

It went on to say that these onions will develop shallot size bulbs under the right conditions and the young tops can be harvested and used as chives. The green tops will shrivel and disappaear in the hot summer months but the monsoon rains will have them back again in the early fall.

HUH...Learn something new everyday!

Golly - from 2006. Don't even remember doing that. No one answered either I guess? So we are all on the same page. Except then, what are these other bunching onions I've grown for years? They also die down for a couple months in the summer but come back in early Fall. That's all that remain from a plot full after getting a long soaking last summer.

Harold, this is off topic, but you're not in real estate, are you? I'm wondering if I know you...
