These are pretty tough ones. You could probably plant in spring.

When I lived in the the New River Valley, I planted as soon as the ground thawed and dried out a bit on top. Often the ground was still frozen below 6 inches but never had any germination problems. In that area that was sometime in March. Here the ground does not freeze, so I plant smooth seeded peas (Willet Wonder or Alaska) around Thanksgiving and wrinkled seeded peas around the first of February.

Thanks!

Our soil hasn't really recovered from the big thaw yet, but I think it's getting close. Smiling

Interesting. One more day and I would have had a sprout to answer the pea timing question. For some reason, I winter sowed Sweet Pea (Lathyrus belinensis) and it's sprouted today. Hurray! So I guess if my soil isn't too soggy, I'm probably good to go with the others.

I didn't do anything in the garden today. It felt chilly in spite of the sun being out.

I had them stacked up for the winter but spread them back out today getting ready for spring planting. I have some peas planted and probably mostly will be planting eggplants there.

I planted four kinds of lettuce in flats today along with some flower seeds and dahlias I got in the mail. Also planted the last of the dahlia tubers kept over winter. They didn't have eyes yet but needed to be in dirt. If I don't see growth in a few weeks then out they go. Starting to get crowded in the garage. I have lots of seeds to plant when timing is right. I think a cauliflower germinated. Can't believe how fast that was. When they are about 4" tall I will plant more seeds (cauliflower).

My cauliflower germinated after three days. Amazing. Spring has truly sprung. They are under lights just two inches away with clear covers to keep them and the tomato seeds moist.

I got a few peas planted, but now I have to rewire my Springhouse before I can do any more. Stupid, destructive raccoon completely shredded the cord!

I guess it must be springtime... Hilarious!

I haven't spotted any groundhogs yet, but I know they're stirring.

Meanwhile, it's barely sprinkling today but at these temps it's enough to delay me planting my peas..... Tomorrow I have to bus around town, so peas will go in on Wednesday - I HOPE!

Here is my 7 foot square bed that last year I planted tomatoes in. My idea was to dress up my veggie areas by planting crocus around them for some spring color.

Thumb of 2014-04-07/Newyorkrita/917755

And also planted crocus around this tomato bed which is next to that square one.
