Debra, I LOVE that iris! That scent is just plain fun!
In my last neighborhood, I planted it all along my fence just for the kids. I also shared it with every neighbor I could possibly force it on. When it was in bloom, the whole neighborhood smelled like we'd had a grape nehi flood!
I was thrilled to find it growing at this house when we bought it. I brought some of mine along with me, and the two are slightly different, but both are delicious.
Hurray! Lovey dubby

Cindy, you are the only person I have run across to think as I do that it smells like Grape Nehi, rather than Kool-Aid. My maternal grandmother kept cases of the stuff on her back porch for us.

Well, As to the scents of iris, I don't smell real good. Sticking tongue out .wait, that's NOT what I mean! My sense of smell isn't the best(.that sounds better ! Whistling ). Here's a list that I compiled of different iris, and their aroma. The ones with a *, are ones that I grow, and THINK smell the way they are "supposed" to..
Black Magic* Anise.....or MAYBE root beer?
Gypsy Woman "
Grape Situation Grape Kool-Aid
Sweet Lena grape Soda pop
I. pallida * grape
Grapette grape
Pocohontas* grape
September Sailor Root Beer
Gingersnap Root beer
Elkhart Root beer
Inca Chief* Root beer
Picador* Root beer
Alcazar * Root beer
English Cottage* fresh washed linen....reminds me of sheets dried on the clothes line!
Loreley* lilacs
Lemon Pledge lemon
Idol's Dream lemon
Lime Mist lime
Peking Summer orange
Heartbeat Away citrus
Last night daffodils
Petite Polka Nestle's Quick
Burgandy Brown chocolate
Death By Chocolate chocolate

I will add that of the ones that I grow, some of them just "smelled good" to me ,until someone else pointed out the "name' of the scent...then I said "yeah, it DOES smell like...." So, does anybody grow these? Is the list accurate ?Can you add any more ? I started gathering this info because I though about a "theme" garden...all different aromas, but, I got side-tracked someplace Confused !.....Arlyn

My sense of smell is limited, too, especially in Spring when this things are blooming Sticking tongue out , so I don't have anything to add. BUT, I have now added these to my list:

English Cottage
Lime Mist

Man, now I really feel left out. I have only 1 iris that smells, and it's my NoID that smells like grape koolaid (I haven't smelled/tasted Grape Nehi in over 30 years, so don't really remember).

I've always been puzzled by claims like "plant A smells just like whatzit." Other than the one that smells like cat urine to me (maybe English Charm?), I've never found such claims to be meaningful. There was an interesting little piece that's relevant to all of this in the January 1950 issue of the AIS bulletin, in which the author, A. W. MacKenzie, writes about a study in which 58 people "were asked to smell flowers of Bombeya natalensis and report" what they smelled like. "Clover strawberries, almond, heliotrope, coconut candy, honeysuckle, turnips, wild cherry, May flowers and stale orange rind together, lemon and apple blossoms, are some of the descriptions given by those who called the odor pleasant. Rotten coconut, lemon-lime, rotten eggs, sweaty socks, soured milk, wilted cucumber, pyridine, floor wax and 'something rotten' are among those given as unpleasant." You say Kool-Aid; I say tomato.
