alrighty gardeners....Day 2 of the Massive Garden clean up is officially done. The Kitchen Garden is completely cleared of two years of debris....compost piles tidied up plus a lovely fresh manure pile from Barney the Lonely Goat. The wind is fierce today so we all got a bonus Dirt Facial. Luckily I am far from petite so my size was an asset today....lots of skinny people having trouble staying upright, Hilarious! .

I let the hired men do much of the work today and I started on another abandoned project. My basement studio hasn't seen any action in more than two years....everything really came to a halt in August 2011. So, today I armed myself with the shop vac and some hefty bags and got purging - set a timer and everything. Did several rounds of 27 Thing Fling (throwing out or giving away 27 things in 15 minutes). Mixed up a batch of special sauce (Dawn and vinegar) and started washing counters, walls and floors in the Jewelry room. Still two big rooms to go but Progress being made Hurray!

I see some of you are mulching with straw - anyone trying the Straw Bale technique? Despite the weather I keep mumbling Spring is Coming...Spring is Coming....

Catherine, you are really doing great on the spring cleaning. I should clean out my garage but I doubt I will actually do it.

I just use the straw as mulch. Never tried the straw bale gardening method.

WOW! Catherine, please keep mumbeling. Spring will soon be here! You had me rolling a few times there, thank you. Now speaking of not being petite, we must roll a certain way, when we roll. LOL.

Dianne,

Nice talking to a "local".

I have five blueberry shrubs. Four Southern Highbush varieties, Misty, O'Neal, Sunshine Blue, and Southmoon . We are getting ripe fruit from the O'Neal now. I just picked up my fifth blueberry a few weeks ago from Green Acres. It is a rabbiteye variety, Pink Lemonade. I am not sure how it will handle the heat and low chill hours. I heard it is delicious and I can't wait to see pink blueberries.

I also have a garden bed full of garlic and I am getting ready to put veggies in the ground. With this great weather we have been having I am looking forward to fresh veggies.

What are your favorite plants/flowers?

Sherrill

ahh, VirginiaRose, we're sisters, eh? I admit to having a tick climb out of my (Very Curly) mop and saunter down my neck to the horror of my husband while eating dinner one night. Not a fashion statement I agree

My husband found a tick on him already! So much for the bitter, cold temps killing off the bug population. Grumbling

Oh no, who could think bugs could survive in this cold weather?

I didn't do anything in the garden except unpack my veggie plants that came today. My stuff from Territorial Seeds came earlier today and my stuff from Burpee came just a short while ago.

I got two boxes of daylilies today and a box of Dahlia yesterday and a box of houseplants the day before that. LOL.

Actually, I was responding to the tick thing.

I AM, however, disappointed in Terr. Seed and Burpee.

We had a few warm days and the bugs came out of no where! I even found a huge spider on the garage door, now I know why we had no spider crickets all winter, this guy was eating them! He was huge, my DH said it might have been a wolf spider so he sprayed it and then stomped it and after that, I got out of the car. *Blush*

I got my little yellow redbud tree today from Audubon Workshop! They shipped it in a plastic bag with shredded paper around the roots! I've never seen anything packaged like that. I removed it from the bag and put it in a bucket of water, and will plant it tomorrow. I have four days off from work, so I hope that I get a lot done in the yard.

I got two boxes of dahlias. Not a long, only 12. But four have nice growth already. Potted up six and will do the others tomorrow. Indoor flats and pots are doing really well. If I can just keep them going til I can get them outdoors at least to harden off, then into the ground. Should be a bumper crops of flowers and vegies.
