Almost all of the dahlias that I have left in the ground to overwinter have broken ground and are growing quite happily. I was lazy this spring and only dug up 5 clumps to split. Will probably regret that decision next year.....

Beautiful! Last year was my first time growing dahlias and I did them from seed. They formed tubers, which I left in the ground and now they are popping up all over the perennial garden, have no idea what they will look like, this is fun.

One of my three dahlias is slowly starting to show up...fingers crossed it will not be pummelled by the winds or if the rains do manage to show up here. Rolling my eyes.

Some of mine were reluctant to grow and then quite a few sprouted at the same time. It must be an internal clock that doesn't always work with each tuber.

Oh that is so good to know Arlene! I was getting tempted to dig and just check what is going on in the other two containers..but will keep my hands away from it for now.. Big Grin

It happened one time to my other plant, not a Dahlia but a Eucomis, it was not showing anything, so I dug in and lifted the bulb a bit, and it just responded well after that, catching up with the summer bloom season.

My impatience won against me..I dug the other two pots just to peek what is going on....happy to say, the tubers are growing woohoo! Maybe it is our crazy temps..that is why it is taking its sweet time. I exposed the slowly growing eye a bit..hope the plant does not mind. Big Grin

I have not pulled my tubers from storage yet, but I am fairly sure I will have blooms in July:)

April has been unusually cold here in Michigan. A couple of years ago I planted dahlias ~ may 10th. This year I think I will wait until the end of May.

Young dahlia sprouts are candy to snails. This is one of the few circumstances in which I bait - otherwise, none of my dahlias will survive. Hope the rest of you do not have as much of a problem. Once they reach about 6-8 inches tall, they are big enough to survive the attacks.
