If it's the yellow one, yes, Paul. Thanks for the welcome.

Just back from looking at the data base (still finding my way around this site!)
and thanks to all who mentioned Megabucks, but I don't think that's it. It's more
ruffled than Gladys Austin. Bit it could be. The colors are very much alike.

Millenium Falcon was the "gateway drug" for me, but once addicted, I'm now onto
so many other irises - ruffled, stitched, solid, etc...I'm looking for a nice clear red, verging, if anything,
on raspberry. - like the red glaze on my porcelain cachepot that is temporarily my avatar! That glaze on a vase looks
good with red flowers. Forgive me if I don't always respond quickly. I'm on and off my computer or working in
my studio, getting ready for art shows. The next will be at the Pasadena Convention Center June 20-22.
Wishing I had a big bouquet of red irises to display in a big vase! Next year!

I am just getting into the broken color irises. I did not think I would like them as much but the pale ones so far are very lovely.

Hi Jan. If I didn't welcome you -- Welcome! Green Grin!

My computer doesn't show your vase as raspberry -- so this may be a moot point -- but a raspberry red in my garden would be Society Lady.

Hi and thanks, Muddymitts. I'd call your iris a reddish-brown,with
some purple in the falls. Monitors do look different ! It's very pretty.
My glazes have a lot of depth and the red sometimes
can have green in it or look more burgundy-colored. However
I like it best when is has a very slightly bluish cast - like a raspberry.
It has to do with the oxides in the glaze and whether or not there's
sufficient smoke in the kiln at just the right time. Sorry if that's more than
you ever wanted to know about porcelain glazes!

Paul, I like your expression of joy for grandchildren. I've been walking on air since my son called
from Los Angeles and gave me the news that my baby grandson was born this morning.

Are you a hybridizer.? I imagine it to would be great fun to be a breeder of irises. All those colors.

I don't think I have earned the title of Hybridizer. I'm an iris...plant lover. I have raised iris, daylilies, hostas and amaryllis from seed...

Good morning! I have a wide range of grandchildren's ages. The eldest is in his 30's, then there's a 10 yr old, an almost
two, and a day old! I'll be traveling south to L.A. in a week to see little Nate and his brother Elias, the almost two yr. old.
Going to take a peek at Calif_Sue's wish list. I love to look at irises! Muddy mitts, those are lovely reddish irises!
Thanks to all for the welcome and the congrats!

I'm serious about thinning out the Gladys Austin/Megabucks irises. I have four beds of them! Can ship for postage.

Jan,
Congratulations on your new grandchild.. I have a 2 month old Grandson that's new to the family. They're such a joy.

Take a look at 'Gladiatrix'. Mine hasn't bloomed yet but the pictures I've seen might be complimentary to your glaze. It's a space-age plicata. There's a picture in the database. It might be too much on the brown/red, but it's pretty bright. There's Dynamite which is a deep red. On the more subdued, raspberry side, I like 'Mulled Wine'.
Thumb of 2014-05-31/Henhouse/f946dc

Your topography looks similar to mine... Redwoods, firs, oaks and deer fencing. Curious to know if you have had a second nasty wave of Sudden Oak Death as I have here in Santa Cruz Co? I'm guessing the drought has accelerated it again by putting the trees under stress. My forest looks like a war zone.

To extend the useful time of your vase, there are some really nice red Dahlias in that shade.

Thanks, Sherry. Loving your iris photos!
We're in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County. I think there has been some Sudden Oak Death
in our area, but not devastating yet. We have a lot of oaks and redwoods...and Poison Oak!
We're on 75 acres, owned jointly with eldest daughter, who is a nurse-practitioner. We got in just
before the wineries and grape growers "discovered" our valley, nearly 30 years ago. ! Could never afford the land now.

We have a lot in common - irises and grandchildren, especially! I also love dahlias, but, come to think of it, no red ones.
A good suggestion. Thanks.

Muddymitts - thank you too for the photos of red irises ! I'm taking notes!

...and getting back to my original question about the i.d. of my two-tone iris.
One reason I think that it's name is Gladys Austin, and not Megabucks, is because
I got the iris in the mid-'80's, and Megabucks, if I recall correctly, was introduced in 1990.
I'll have lots of Gladys to give away.

Hello Jan,
Welcome. I am also fairly new. And congratulations on the new grandchild. Mine are 8 months to 23 years.
As to the ID question. Your picture more matches Megabucks, 1990 iris. The Gladys Austin, though 1985, has a violet end to a space age beard lifted off the fall and a brown rim around the fall.
I do like it and hope id is finalized one day soon.

Hi Dave - You are probably right. I just looked at a lot of pics and your point about the beard convinced me.
For anyone interested:

Thanks, Dave.
Now I have to wonder about the dates - but the pictures are quite conclusive.
I'm calling my noid iris Megabucks - and thanks again for all who responded to my question.

I just realized that I may have done something wrong in posting photos from Dave's Garden and not
asking permission. I can remove them. Done.
All the other photos I've posted in the forum are my own.

@janwax. Here is a better way to copy that image in the middle: copy and paste the ATP BB Code above any enlarged image in the database. It looks like you saved the tiny thumbnail of my photo on to your computer and it got even smaller at some point when you uploaded it into the post.

Hilarious!
It was so blurry so I wanted to make sure that you knew how to post those. You can use any image in the database that way and the neat thing about them is the link above the image takes you to the database entry so you can view any additional images.

But yes, be careful posting photos that you got elsewhere. I often save some to my computer for my own reference but am careful not to post them elsewhere, at least not without the proper attribution. Hopefully we have plenty of database photos here anyway!
