I remember being confused about this last year.
If I wait long enough, it will show me who it is.
But I'm too curious to wait!
Anybody know?

Asiatic lilies... which would not normally be shade plants (but they grow where planted or where bulbils fell). Smiling

Me too, but it's not.
It is a shade plant.
My best guess from memory is Jacob's Ladder, but it doesn't look right for that.

My first guess would be a true lily, Lilium, of some sort.

Edit: Oops, I cross-posted with several people! Smiling

I actually bought some last year, and I was surprised to find on the package it recommended planting them in the shade. I did and they have done very well, nothing special, just a common mixture of them. Of course, I planted a few in the sun also...just in case.

Is this the type of plant that squirrels re-locate? Maybe the squirrels planted it in the shade?

It reminded me of my Easter Lilies at our other house, they used to pop up all over.

Well, it sure does look a lot like that.
But I am pretty sure I remember having this same question last spring.
And if it had been a lily, I would have moved it.
We shall see.

mind readers lol

If it is a sun loving plant and is in the shade it may not bloom.

Lilies can be moved by squirrels, come in on compost or transplants (gift plants from a neighbor or friend) or can also grow from seeds from other lilies you may have around your property. I also think it looks like that. But one thing I am sure of -- it is not Jacob's Ladder. My mom has some of that and yours is not it. So at least you can eliminate that one.

OK.

Everyone is so convinced it's a lily.
It's in the far back Southwest corner of my property and the other lilies are in the East side, not 10' from the property line on that side.

racking my brain, the only thing I can think of is that I got some kind of lily in trade that wanted shade. I know at one time I had a rain lily I got in trade, but they have different leaves.

ARE THERE any lilies that want shade?????

It doesn't resemble Polemonium (Jacob's Ladder) unless maybe there's another genus of plants with that common name. I sure will be interested to see what it turns out to be. Smiling

well in my experience the asiatics will grow quite well in shade. So will iris. But then they just don't bloom. I guess some varieties may tolerate more shade than others. if it were me, I would try digging it up gently and potting it and putting it in the sun and see if it blooms this summer-then you will know what it is. If it still doesn't bloom, just overwinter it in the pot and it should bloom next year. Of course if it isn't in your way, I'd just leave it. But if it doesn't bloom-I'd move it to sun.

Yeah, I plan to.

I got several shade plants in 2010 from the audubon society here.
A solomon's seal
A FALSE solomon's seal
A Jacob's ladder
Those 3 are all tangled up in my head together.
And who knows what else I may have gotten that time - it was a busy time....

I suspect it is one of those.
OR a lily I received in trade that is SUPPOSED to be planted in shade.
Or maybe it IS a squirrel transplant, but that seems fishy.
