Susan, I don't blame you for being confused. Registration is feted because it is supposed to stop such confusion from happening. Hemerocallis 'Middendorffii' 1946 (vs Hemerocallis middendorffii 1856) is unfortunate and silly. It must have slipped past the censors.

Technically, Middendorffii is a patronym (named for someone) Latinised by adding "ii" (which indicates gender male) to Middendorff, someone's surname.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

oh well .... and I hope that threat will show were the Altissima will belong to.

I am glad that there is the side of Plodeck. From my perspective, species do not have benefits that are no longer in the hybrids. In my garden there are many voles, on the Middendorfii and the Fulva have not yet dug around. That's why and ohter reasons I like to hybridize with species.

another species with me is fulva europe (tall, very vigorous and very strong flower stems) that has flowered yesterday. That's too early, because the blooms in Europe until the end of May or June.

And this one is new in my garden ... maybe Corky. It opened late yesterday, so I didn´t took a pic - to dark.

Beautiful May blooms, Hans, and so glad to hear the voles leave your species alone. Hurray!

What a lovely link. Thanks Hans.

A.Th.v. Middendorff. Journey in the far North and Eastern Siberia during the years 1843 and 1844. (German).
I would say he did what most collectors did then: sent what he collected in Siberia to specialists and then published their report in his printed journal. As a thank you (and it was expected), the specialists named a species after the collector.

Lovely blooms Hans!!

I just cannot imagine journeying into the far north/eastern siberia in the mid-1800s in pursuit of specimens. Made of some resilient fibre ... both plant and man.

but...hey you guys... stop capitalizing the species when, I thought, it designates a reference to the hybrid! LOL

LOOOOOVE PERSISTENT BUTTERFLY!! I bought more of it this year too. Big Grin

I had a sort of bloom today. MACKENZIE'S RAINBOW had a bloom half open this evening. I collected the pollen and pulled the bloom apart. It's going to be great I can tell.

I have to say I'm impressed with it's performance so far. It rained all night & until about 2 or 3 today & then the sun came out. I looked at the blooms right before dark & they had held up quite well with the rain & also didn't loose their color from the sun. It was new to me a year ago, so this is the true test year for it.

I think everyone's lovely NOIDs should have a special database page of their own, or at least get uploaded to the main daylily entry. What a trooper Better by Design has been!

Hans, that sure looks like Corky to me ... was it received without a name attribution, or lost its garden marker? What a neat historical daylily!

Lovely. Fred, I don't think a photo of LIFE UNLIMITIED is in the database.
