Seems this type of thing has happened on all the iris forums, and probably also on the other "plant forums', as well. It makes it hard for the "real" iris(or whatever) "newbie" to become part of the "community"., as members have (and deservedly so) become very distrustful of "new' people responding to the 'for postage", or trade offers. I have been "warned off"of several scammers, in the past, by members who had previous experience with the individual, so I guess the bottom line is to rely on the moderators, and other members to keep everyone up dated on the scamming activity. ....Arlyn

Arlyn I agree . I am new here. I have had irises growing for a while, 3 or 4 types but don't really know much about them. I am also new to Daylilies. I was so glad to find this site. Not only for the info but for the knowledge and experience from others that are here. People like that that are just out for plants makes it harder for others to learn on sites like this also. Just makes others distrusting as I can certainly understand.

That's exactly what I'm talking about, Cat! When I was a "newbie" on the different forums, I was very impressed ,not only by those willing to share knowledge, but plants ,as well. It's a shame that things like this come along to disrupt this "family" atmosphere! I know many treat the "for postage" offers, or even trades, with newbies by asking that the postage money be sent first, before the plants are sent. Downside to that is there have been a couple cases where the "scammer' was the one "offering"! "You send me the money, and then I'll ship the iris". The money gets sent, but the iris never does! I guess the only way to "think" it's the "real deal", is to get to know the person involved, after "talking" to them, or with them, on the forums, over a period of time. I wonder if there should be , or even could be, a "special mark" put by members names, that denotes that member as a "square shooter", who has honored all the deals they have been involved in? Something like the "garden Watchdog", on the DG site. After some time goes by, and you have made several successful deals with a person, and you "know" them, trust is no longer an issue, but for the "newbie" ,it can be tough road to get there.....Arlyn

I am relatively new as I joined just last fall. I had loitered outside just reading the posts and enjoying the photos so I 'know' most of you much longer than you have 'known' me. At one point I had a small business where I sold to the public. I not only waited for the check but I waited until it cleared their bank before I shipped. Unfortunately you cannot tell the good people from the crooks.

There is a local grower who digs, ships and waits for my approval before I add the actual postage to my order and send a check. She is a great person but I have not shared this grower with anyone on the web because I think she is a sitting duck for some unscrupulous site stalker. On an earlier thread we were asked to share our vendors and I refrained from posting a good thing to my fellow iris lovers because I did not want to be responsible for any harm coming to this grower. This is a sad world sometimes. I do not mind in the least paying and/or shipping first just as long as I get to play too. smiles

I am still on DG have been there for 10 years now (think this will be my last year since I don't visit there much anymore) anyway you know how we have the feedback on there maybe Dave could have something like that here, just a thought.

That's kind of what I was talking about, only with members, but having a "feedback section" for vendors would be a good thing, as well. I still check in to DG on a daily basis, and use the "garden Watchdog" feature, and read all the feedback responses. Only problem with that type of thing, is there are cases where the "whole story" is not told, and that can give a bad rep to the grower, when they really don't deserve it. I do like that some growers respond to the feedback, both pro, and con....says something to me about their willingness to satisfy their customers needs...Arlyn

It's a shame you have to watch out for people on her trying to scam you also. There are enough sites like ebay and others that you already have to be watch full of who you are dealing with and that isn't always enough...

Timely topic as I will be posting a my-daylilies-for-your-iris trade thread this weekend. Guess I should be ready to pester Dave about anyone about whom I have any questions. Sticking tongue out For me, though, I think the bads ones are rare. Smiling

Thankfully they are rare, but even one taints the pond for everyone! On a nicer note, I just made a walk-a-bout, despite the temp of 45, and the spitting rain....and caught Clarence" in the act" !

@ Arlyn Understandable with the weather we are having. I think winter is trying to come back. I really need to get out and plant some daylilies, I wish it would quit raining and warm back up a little.

@Cat, if you want to tag someone and summon them to a post, enter their user name and don't leave a space between the @ and that name. So to summon Arlyn, it's @crowrita1 Thumbs up

And don't edit it once it's posted, it won't send them the tag message, ask me how I know. Rolling my eyes.

I'm glad that you are an addict, Rob. With luck someone will see your garden & become one also.

I have never even tried e-bay. At my age I have enough stuff (except irises).
