Last fall I had to leave my family home and I dug up one of my deceased mother's rose bushes to take with me. I planted it in my new back yard and this spring it's not doing well at all. No leaves at all, but the branches are still green. I dug it up again and am going to try and pick a better spot for it. Any suggestions on how to get it to perk up?

If you had an abnormally long, cold winter it may just be late breaking dormancy - don't worry about it yet. Perhaps it would be best to just put it in a big pot where you can keep a close eye on it and move it around until you decide on the best spot to plant. Keep it adequately watered but don't give it fertilizer or anything until it starts actively growing. Good luck!

As long as the canes are still green, there's hope. Just leave it alone & let it settle in.. everything's running late this year.

I would also leave it be. Green canes are a good sign. If the ends of the green canes are brown or black, cut it back to the green part and seal the ends of large canes. I use Elmer's glue to seal any cut canes as wide or wider than my pinky.

I wouldn't use any chemical fertilizer, but you could top dress the plant with coffee grounds, crushed egg shells, banana peels or compost.

My roses are just starting to set leaves. A couple that looked dead (brown canes) are setting leaves. I don't give up until the canes are black and the roots sparse and brittle. Even then, I sometimes cut them at the ground level and pray for resurrection (kidding, but roses sometimes come back from apparent death).

My leaves are turning yellow with dark brown spots! is there some remedy to get rid of it? Is there a certain systemic chemical that I have to use? I think this is called brown spot but I'm not sure!! thank you for any help!!!!

Lynda - Sounds like you have "black spot" Pretty common, especially if you're in a humid environment. I use "Green Light" if I get blackspot really bad, but in my area, I rarely do due to extreme drought. But it looks like it's being discontinued.

I don't think there's a remedy in the true sense of the word. There are preventive measures, but you're too late for those. Those measures have to be taken before the black spot shows up.

I get a lot of black spot and I do nothing about it. The leaves get ugly, fall off, and are replaced by pretty green leaves.

When I come up with a solution to black spot I will be sure and post it. Some of my roses I think I could do with out spraying, some of my roses it does no good to spray, and some of my roses are actually harmed by spraying, even with the solution diluted down to an amount that is barley effective the leaves seem to suffer leaf burn. I try to pick off the really bad looking leaves as I go along weeding everyday, that way the weeds never get to be a problem and the roses don't get a chance to look really terrible, it only takes a few minutes to do both if done on a daily basis. Still there are a couple of my roses that the leaves never look good on this year, but I have yet to determine if it is black spot or a combination of several leaf diseases causing it. But I am coming more to the conclusion the best solution is to select roses that resist black spot, and here even the Double Knock Out series often suffer pretty bad from black spot, while a few others seldom have black spot at all. My neighbor has a Julia Child and it never gets treated at all, and it is doing really well.
