I have a favorite nursery which is wonderful for many plants including tender succulents but not so great on the
hardy succulents if we have only cactus and succulents that does not cover it. Think we need a breakout for hardy and tender.
Otherwise I would not recommend them in that category at all.

What do some of the other sempervivum and sedum people think? @valleylynn @gg5 @springcolor @webesemps @goldfinch4

Ferns are added.

I'm happy to split out succulents between tender and hardy if a few others agree.

dave said:I just uploaded a big batch of updates to the Green Pages, mostly centered around the checkboxes. All the checkboxes that show what each company specialize in are now listed at the top of the green pages homepage. You can click on any of them and view all the companies that specialize in that category.

Also, when viewing a company, you can click on the category from their page to view other companies who also sell the same thing.

I think we need a Vines and Climbers category. Also Water Plants and Ground Covers. And why do we need a separate category for sweet potatoes and tomatoes? Wouldn't that be covered under Vegetable? (and yes I know a tomato is considered a fruit, I never think of them that way though)

My thinking is that there are a good number of companies who specialize specifically in these things and it seems good to me to include them as a category of their own, similar to how we do it with Clematis, Irises, Daylilies, and Roses (all of which are perennial flowers.)

There aren't any companies that specialize in corn or beans so we don't have categories for those. Smiling

Grasses ? It may make sense to just keep tossing ideas out there and see how many get used or not. I assume it would be easy enough to delete inactive categories. It's easy enough to open the web site of a given company, scroll through their offerings, and check the boxes of things they offer. I have done this for the few recommendations I've contributed, and am happy to poke around and do some more as time allows. I'm finding it interesting to actually look at their web sites, some of which I've never visited.

I've added grasses.

Yes, by all means check them off. But keep in mind that we're really looking for "Specializing in..." type things here. So a company that happens to also sell an herb on page 95 of their catalog, probably shouldn't have Herbs checked off.

Good point. Usually one can ferret out their specialties from their opening web page which often has an introduction of sorts that will identify their strong suits.

Thanks a ton for all these features! Being able to click one category, then run my eye down the column with numbers of recommendations is a really convenient way to browse and find new companies.

Hopefully, people who browse and realize how easy it is, will be motivated to add more companies and contribute recommendations of (or cautions about) companies already listed.

I think it's cool that the "Category" check boxes are like adding a specific kind of "Thumbs Up" to a company, without writing a review.

And the reviews let you go beyond "it looks like they specialize in XYZ"
and say "I ordered several XYZs from them, and they were great."

@dave, this brings up a point that was discussed before. In addition to the "Post your own review" action, can we add a recommendation, without having to add a written review? Just click on the phrase and it will increase the recommendation number. Also, maybe a native seed category. I checked off native plants for the business that I recommended, but their main specialty is native seed.

Let me give a little more thought about the first question you raised.

As for the second one, when I put in "Native Plants" I was thinking of a broad category not limited to live plants or seeds, but I see how that can be seen the wrong way. How about I rename "Native Plants" to "Natives: Plants and/or Seeds"?

I must be dense but how do the specific nurseries get added to the various categories? Like I had previously recommended a place that specializes in Plumeria and Adeniums and one that specializes in rare Cacti and Pachypodiums and clicking on 'Tropicals' (I figured the closest match) neither of them show up.
