Exploring our place in Pennsy and surrounding area we found (besides Platanthera lacera, which I just posted into the July thread) one of the nicest examples of Cladonia cristatella! Whoever claims that Lichen only grow some mm per year is plainly wrong. This year with all the rain, they just explode into growth.
Normally I find Cladonia cristatella growing only on stones and very rocky soil, this time we came across two cut logs which were just covered with it. That is a first for me!
Here is one of the wood pieces -

So Kathy does this news mean Cubits is going away and all these other threads?
If there is advertising on the new site that will be a big difference.

I have asked for the forums to be moved. There will be ads and they will be appropriate to gardening but that happens organically the more we chat about a subject over time. Cubits will still be here but i will make it a resource rather than discourse. Dave will not be working on cubits. He'll be focused on the new site so that's where the cool stuff will happen. We will continue chatting as always on the new website but I will just be one of the crowd! Hilarious! Your suggestions will go to Dave.

I am learning more every hour. Feel free to ask questions.

Wow, Ursula, I love the Cladonia cristatella. I need to start looking harder at the ground when I am out int he woods.

Not sure what to think about the changes. I was just getting used to finding my way around in the Cubit. I am glad, however, that Kathy will have more free time. She has done an amazing job at bringing us together. I think I might have given up with the first orchid to expire it it had not been for the wealth of information and support I have found here. Thanks Kathy and all of my new orchid friends. I will figure out the new space when the switch is made and will be in touch.

I hope the new site is like this one and not like all the orchid boards I have seen. What makes this so interesting is the freedom to make new cubits (ie subjects) and threads. When things are too regimented, they are boring, IMHO.

I agree! Janice, I just was reading a cool article about what happens when crazy creative endeavors are not tolerated, etc. I have yet to read the whole interview but what I read was so interesting http://edge.org/print/conversa...

I think we will have this freedom there. The forums will be moved over to the website as is from what I'm hearing, so we can continue the chat. It should be a very smooth transition. I have access to the skeleton of the website and found that my profile transferred right over when I joined it. The goals are for it to be easy for all types of gardeners to interact and for Dave to have some income to feed his growing family. I personally wanted to make some income with google ads on cubits too but it was not meant to be. Also Dave is very open to new ideas. People are voicing their needs already and he is responding by programming very cool stuff!

We had some thunderstorms tonight. I thought I'd be smart and cover the orchids with the tarp before the storm hit but the 60mph winds kept whipping the grommets off the nails and there I was, holding the tarp in place when the rains came. Wet again! Afterwards the colors were intense.
