Since dormantsrule is not Karol Emmerich, it's not really a direct ad from the hybridizer where it can be suggested she place the post in the Cassified/Sales Forum, dormantsrule just copied and pasted the info. Providing a simple link with a "hey, look at Karol's newest intros!" would have probably been the wiser choice of course. As mentioned, there are many new announcement threads, daylily people get excited to see the newest intros from their favorite hybridizers and then discussions follow with wish lists and the merits of this and that cultivar.

Thumbs up

Sue, that has been my interpretation of Dave and Trish's guidelines on advertising here.

So are we saying that as long as it is not the hybridizer posting and pasting , such posting and pasting is acceptable and should not be moved?

That would be my interpretation. We haven't really seen any real problem as far as I know with too many hybridizers or nurseries creating obvious spamming type posts. If they are already part of the active forum community, I'm sure most love seeing posts of, "hey, we have our newest intros up!" and a link is unobtrusive enough, if one wants to click it fine, if not, scroll on. I love the threads where other members post the link to new intros and then the hybridizer also joins in the ensuing discussion. IMHO, that's the beauty of having a garden forum, the give and take of ideas, photos, experiences, tips and failures of what we all love, gardening! Without rigid rules.

"...my concern is also that active members, like myself, could just go ahead and start posting all sorts of such seller's items and prices and links, the amount of new posts dedicated to "getting the word out" would be limitless. I'd be glad to help out the forum by doing so, too, when there are so many deserving sellers out there ... and at much better prices." Whistling

I think again the key to Sue's message is 'new intros'.

Ok, I love freedom as much as anyone but I know without rules freedom turns into chaos. So now we have a rule, it may not be what I agree with, but as long as I know the rules I can play in the game. No add posting except by active members and only for "new intros" in the forums.

What we've tried to do is NOT set hard and fast rules, but instead rely on the "spirit of the law" (so to speak) that ATP welcomes vendors in all of the forums, but that we will not be overrun with advertisements. We've found that making hard and fast rules only makes more rules to further clarify, and turns moderators and admin into a police force- not fun for anyone.

The moderators are really key here in determining if a seller is posting only in order to advertise, or if the spirit is to pass quality info on to other members.

Questions come up. Posts are sometimes re-evaluated. Following up on questions- these are all things that allow us to be flexible and make sure that we are still on the track that we want to be on. It's always good to double check, and it's always good for members to ask questions and voice concerns. Checks and balances are good things.

ATP is a fairly self policing community. We believe that everyone makes a name for themselves. I don't think that a "free-for-all" would be very tolerated because the community at large knows that would just ruin things for everyone.

We're very happy with how ATP runs, and continues to run. A post or two may or may not be in the perfect place- that's not a problem for us. The spirit of ATP is that we all have fun, and that this is a place welcoming to everyone, and I think we're doing so. By following the spirit, hopefully we can continue in the same way we began.

Well I was hoping someone would step in and void my stupid rule, "active members only for new intros" why would new intros be treated any different than a thousand other topics. Trying to make a point, but Trish did it much better,
But the topic was about having "guidelines" and not rules, so I think Trish stated the guide lines pretty well. Thank You! I agree

Good morning. My ears were burning and thought I should chime in about this KE intro post.

I belong to a private "Buyers Only" robin where members exchange experiences with sellers. One ongoing gripe is collection prices as many feel like they're being held hostage to get a "discount" by having to buy an entire collection of cv's. The posts were becoming a humorous operatic drama about devaluation, etc. Days later KE announced her new intros with individual prices, instead of a collection price. The individual prices were perceived by robin members to be uninflated, and most robin memebrs applauded. I did a copy and paste to ATP and never really gave a thought to been seen as marketing, redundant or a printed reproduction of a website. However, I really have no problem editing the post to providing just a link.

Appears to me that only 12 threads received replies yesterday. That doesn't seem so busy that a user gets lost on the forum. The daylily forum is somewhat slow IMO and doesn't get that much action, especially if a user is not interested in hybridizing or the latest intros. But it is my understanding that the forum is about only daylilies so that a sale for daylilies would be appropriate to advertise. If a sale was for a hodge podge of all kinds of plants, it would not be appropriate. But when it is for only daylilies it would seem appropriate to offer it up in the forum. Maybe a separate sticky thread for sales and advertisements would work? This could work for the iris forum, the peony forum, or other forums that are specific to only one kind of plant.

It has also been common practice to list what a person buys and what they received as bonus and to post pics of an order so users can see what they received. I think initiating a trade or a request for a specific plant is done as well.

I like to purchase from Bill Marryott but I don't check his site constantly. I rather appreciate when someone posts that he is having a sale or a BOGO or that he is taking new orders for the year. I think the key is to name the thread appropriately so that the title lets a user know it is a thread about a sale and doesn't waste time clicking on it if it is something they won't be interested in. After all, the most important thing regarding growing daylilies..... you have to own one first! Obtaining daylilies is a big thing, many people collect them and have several hundred. So advertising dl just seems like part of the game. It would be hard to separate ads, showing off new intros, naming intros, new websites and such, it all seems to mesh together alot.

Karol already has great reviews in the Green Pages, including one from dormantsrule (thank you for coming here and providing further details I tip my hat to you. ) and it doesn't belong in the Classified/Group Buys, that's for owners of the nursery post not ATP members unless they have arranged a group buy.

Still looking at this as an outsider trying to learn. I had looked on the green pages under daylilies and did not see a listing for Karol or for Emmerich so that's why I asked.

The way I look at it, as an interested non-daylily person, seems that all the daylily folks 'know' stuff and know where to find things.
It might be good to put the information in a few places where us 'non' folks could find it...who knows, we might be tempted to join the pleasant insanity.

Keep up the good work! Thumbs up
