My first re-bloom on this Iris (second season in the ground). I bought it as 'Bewilderbeast', and in spite of the Chernobyl effect on the standards and beards, I'm not so sure of the name now. The spring bloom measured 21" tall. This stalk is measuring 36", and there's only a small hint of yellow. So too tall, and not enough yellow, and re-blooms...

I'm wondering if it's just some of the fallout from a weird weather year, or if this is something besides 'Bewilderbeast'? Any thoughts??

The first picture was taken yesterday, the second 2 months ago.

Sherry, I have many reliable plants throwing off strangeness this year. After looking at the ATP database and on the web, my opinion is that is Bewilderbeast having an odd season. Just my opinion.

With the "broken color" iris, every bloom will be marked differently ,but should be 'similar", I would think. As to the re-bloom, it could be still settling in, or, maybe it is weather -related. I'll do some looking later, and see if there have been any re-bloom reports for this iris...Arlyn

If Bewilderbeast bloomed reliably like the first picture, I would have one in my garden. That is spectacular!!

I can find no record of reported re bloom, which, in itself doesn't really mean too much!...may do it , and was just never reported, for example, or, it may be like Beverly Sills, or Tiger Honey, and DOES rebloom..sometimes, some places under ideal conditions! As to color, the first pic is very like most of the pictures on the AIS wiki, so I would say that pic #1, IS typical, and pic #2is the "abnormal" example, which may be expected for "maiden bloom", as lots of "first blooms", on newly planted iris ,are apt to be odd, in some way....Arlyn

I definitely think it is Bewilderbeast, whose broken color pattern varies greatly from plant to plant (compare the database photos to see what I mean). And other than being weather stressed, the first one looks a lot like mine does on occasion.

Sherry -- can you take a side shot of yours? And share it here?

I have Ziggy, and it's blooms vary alot. Some of them are nearly solid "normal" color. The one next to it may be very striped. They are no two alike at all.

I'm going to see what the other blooms on the stalk do. I doubt that they will all be wonky. This did bloom last year, so it's not it's maiden bloom, but the first time it re-bloomed.
What got me wondering, was the description as having a "sunshine yellow" shoulders, the height, and the beard as being golden brown.
This whacky flower has faded today, so I'll post a picture of the next one down the line.

Mine does have more yellow on the shoulders (not sure how sunshiney it is), but my beards have always been more gold than golden brown. I would definitely not judge by the wonky bloom though.
Just as an FYI: I had an iris that produced a perfectly fine bloom, then a wonky one, but then the rest of the blooms were again normal. I think the wonky one had gotten a bit of frost damage.
