Vickie - For some reason, I was thinking you were in the south (like Florida) and they don't easily survive here, so I was impressed that yours were doing so well. But now that I realize you are in Indiana, I fully understand!!! I think your decision is probably a very good one!

I had them for about 2 years before they finally perished here. I loved them, the foliage was beautiful, and they spread the first year. But by the second year, they were diminishing and struggling. By the 3rd year, very few fans appeared. I still might have a few (very few) fans but haven't seen a bloom in probably 4 years.

I think the soil and heat here in FL is part of the issue, but I suspect that it could be the root knot nematodes! (sigh) Maybe that is a good thing as we have enough invasive species here in FL already. Sticking tongue out

Gosh, I didn't know that either. Kwanso/Flore Pleno grow like crazy here, I have been giving them to friends and neighbors, literally hundreds of plants. I know next year I will be digging out more. They are my wife's favorite so I am forced to keep some, I also think they are one of the most beautiful plants I grow, but they were just taking overy my named varieties, so they had to go.I hope I have them pretty much under control but I will have to keep an eye on them.

Larry - I did grow some in containers and they lasted much longer until I decided to use the pots for something else! Hilarious! Hilarious! But being in containers kept the roots/runners in check!

I just read through this entire thread.

Here are my Kwanso vs Flore Pleno flowers:

I guess what blows me away is the difference in flowers on the same scape.

I think you have 'flore pleno' (first photo).
The number of stamens present when the flower is more single is very interesting (second photo).

Hi everyone, really interesting thread, I understand late joining in but these are my 'unknowns'. Salvaged from the bonfire in a Victorian cottage garden that was being restored at the time !!

Welcome, Cherylrad! Welcome!

I have what is called 'Flore Peno' and can't wait for it to bloom. I look forward to counting petals, checking stamens and pistals, and still having no sure idea whether it's 'Flore Peno' or 'Kwanso.' This is a great discussion even if very confusing!
