I kinda feel toads in general are getting a bad rap because of a few imports.
I live in Indiana and have at least a dozen toads on my property. I purposely put out shallow bowls of water for the toads. They are a beneficial natural predator of many insects.
I also have many animals dogs, cats, domestic farm animals, and wild creatures and none have been harmed by the toads .
I have Bufo fowleri and Bufo americanus
Yes these toads do have a gland that excretes toxins as a defense but not enough or strong enough to kill another animal under normal circumstances.
It is probably a good idea to know what you have if you live some where there may be a dangerous species.

Please don't harm our native Bufo they do us a great service. Smiling
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.

You're absolutely right about that, Cinda. Need to identify exactly which ones you have, but lots of people don't do that.

Bufo marinus is extremely harmful to the environment here. They eat other native frogs and toads, fish and even baby birds and rodents. There are numerous cases documented of dogs dying from having mouthed a Cane Toad.

This is about the tiniest frog I have ever seen. I'm certainly not an expert and really don't know much about frogs but I suspect this is a brand new green tree frog. Forget the old adage that touching frogs or toads may cause warts but when first seeing this little guy from a distance I thought it was a wart on the plant leaf.

This frog entertained me by "croaking" and showing how it's done. You can see by the ripples generated in the water and perhaps someone much smarter than I can determine the ripple frequency or what message this one may be sending to the rest of the frog community. Please accept that as a challenge!

Cool! We've only got just limited amphibians here. Wish we had more! BTW, I was wondering about the term "frog strangler" used for periods of excessive rainfall. It turns out that frogs have lungs to use when on land and also can get oxygen through their skin. But they can drown if in water that lacks enough oxygen or when too much water gets into their lungs. Poor things! I've seen baby toads that drowned in containers of water...I guess they landed in there and couldn't get out. Maybe the same thing.

That's interesting information Linda. I did not know that.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

It is great. I like your spirit to construct a shelter for tadpoles.
