The name changes drive me batty. I know about the jovis change to Sempervivum and I'm resistant to using it. Also I have about 300 plant tags printed using the name Jovibarba.

It really has been difficult to keep up with name changes on so many different plants. Seems like it is never ending at times.

The last photo has such interesting coloring. Love it Mark.

Mark,

It's funny because we had a similar mess back in the '70's when they separated Jovibarba from Sempervivum although we certainly didn't have the numbers of them that we do today, especially the heuffs.

I still keep a "J" on the Jovibarba markers as we actually have a few cultivars that are named the same, such as 'Jade', both a semp and a heuff.

The DNA analysis does show that they form a single clade, which means that they should be in the same genus.

Actually as annoying as this is, the division of Sedum into many genera I find VERY annoying! Hopefully the DNA data will re-unite them too!

Kevin

Mark those are wonderful. Each one is so distinctive and different from all others.
Brilliant red on the second photo. I'm fascinated by the form of the one in the first photo. Very interesting.
Beautiful shade of green in the fourth photo, so bright and fresh.

Would love to see updated photos of these next spring. They all look like winners to me.

We found this squarish rock on the hillside, hoping it would be softer than it was... but my dear, sweet BF ground out a shallow dish for me anyway and cut a drain channel. Wicked thunderstorm washed away most of the baby rollers and rocks shortly after I 'planted' them, but I scooped up what was left on the steps and it looks like I can finally say they are alive, growing, and holding themselves in now Hurray!

Nice Planter! I cut planters from stone also. Not too hard once you get the right setup. I consider rollers like different colors of paint and rock is the blank canvas. They'll grow just about anywhere with a little stone dust or no medium at all if the rock has eroded areas.

Great save dirtdorphins. That is a great rock, and a great BF that he would turn it into such a wonderful container for your rollers.

Mark, how is this one doing?
markb said:This is probably my favorite. It has bright glow to it. A bit like J hirta Yellow Green Form, with a rose blush.

Lynn, Just went out to look at it in the rain. It's not looking too healthy. I can give you a couple other comparisons from earlier examples.

That pale color is so interesting. Would love to see more photos of it.
Does it seem to not do well in wet weather?

Mark those are totally lovely!!! Dirtdorphins - your planter is really cool, and I love that about rollers!! You can pick them up and replant them and they do just fine!!! Once they fill in that pot (probably by mid season next year) it will look so amazing!! I tip my hat to you.

Thanks all,
I have a lot of cool rocks, not enough rollers --just the one, that those babies came from and this was my first experiment.
Say I get some more, though, how do you get them to stay until they take hold in an eroded rock surface?

I've seen folks use hardware cloth or chicken wire over the top, just until some roots develop (ugly but it works and is tempo) I've heard of folks using florist pins - but don't see how those would work for your rock projects??

dirtdorphins, If there is a crevice in the rock or you can make one with a grinder or chisel you can squeeze them in so that pressure holds them there. If it's directly on rock Make sure no water will collect in it. I use stone dust that I get from a gravel pit and lay it on the surface then put the rollers on it. I plant them with no roots. If they establish their own roots on the rock they'll grow best that way. You could make a temporary dam out of clay or get creative. The fall is an excellent time for the plants to root. Good luck.

I have a chunk of wood that I keep meaning to carve out a bit and plant some rollers into that...I have some planted there but it isn't a deep enough crevice so they don't stay put Thumbs down

That is really radical changes Mark. I have to keep going back to look at them. Hope you don't mind that I put them side by side for comparison? It is easier for me to see the differences that way.
Now I have to go look at them again. Smiling

You are making me pay more attention to the rollers out in my beds.
