The first blossom on every scape, including fans I separated are fascinated, just the blossom. The strange thing is it seems to be one flower on every scape not stems and the blossoms also get more rosy pink as the month goes by. It just started blooming so it is a late one as well.None of the other daylilies in this batch do any of this. It's (August Flame X Autumn Accent) X .Red Rum. Siblings- the last photo is the one that had fascinated blooms today Why??

I don't understand the "muddy" negativity. To me it is just variations in color, and there would be very few different colors without it. Of course, I am a big fan of the brownish DLs such as Brown Witch, Grey Witch, Third Witch, etc. Would these be considered muddy?

Possibly. I can't really tell. Need pic that is more of a close up to determine that. If it is muddy, I don't think it is all that bad.

The striped one is the same one that this year has fasciated flowers and thus far there are fewer stripes. Its siblings range from red-orange to bright red--I wonder if it has a virus?? Every year it surprises me; it is a very strong growing plant and I moved part of it two years ago and the division is already forming a clump.

A Tale Of Two Seedlings, or how our muddy red-brown baby from that cross is still here and now has received its name; Once upon a time, I had two Jack Carpenter seedlings, and I decided to do a cross to see what I could get. This would be around 2004. I have only one photograph of the pod parent, but the pollen parent was a very large brilliant red I was calling the big red monster. Here is a photo of the pod parent.

Seedling no. 3 from that cross turned out to be red-brown, muddy to my eyes, and the only one that color. I was going to toss it but my husband said, "I like it". "But is is muddy red" said I. "I like it" he said, so it stayed.

Every year from then on, I would try to get rid of it but to no avail because my husband always said "I like it".

A couple of years ago, we moved red-brown muddy to a new location and it flourished. People would come over to see our daylilies and lo and behold most liked this one because as they said, there is nothing else like it. This year, it really bloomed beautifully, and once again gained compliments from other people. So I have given up on getting rid of red-brown muddy and now a name is in order. Since we live about an hour and a half from Shreveport LA, and each year they have a Mudbug Madness Festival, (for those of you who do not know what mudbugs are, they are crawfish, much loved to eat by people in the south, and maybe elsewhere for all I know) so it seems that Mudbug Madness is an appropriate name for red-brown muddy.

Here it is, the new Mudbug Madness daylily--if you tell me it is indeed muddy and should be tossed, remember my husband--he likes it. One last thing: the photos seem to have more of a purple color---trust me, this is red-brown muddy. Thanks for your time reading this, I welcome all comments.

Thanks Catherine. I really do like the color. I have this other seedling that bloomed.... I was hesitant to show it. Not sure what the cross was on this one and I am not sure what you would call the flower form... heavily pleated?...tulip or magnolia form? Every flower opened this way. Sorry about the photo quality and the weeds.
