I hope so! Some of my best soil. I just have to remember water too.
Plant it and they will come.

Mu Ams look sick--having been in the house all winter.
The bloom was pathetic---may be due to the fact that i root-pruned it
after their dormancy period before potting them up again.

I really should try to plant them outside once.... Whistling
I do not have a bed with any space I can contribute to this.
Would they do just as well in pots? Probably not......

I may have some space in my raised bed--but the soil is pretty
matted with Maple feeder roots there. Oh, well--think...think...think...

Gita, I bought a concrete mixing tub from Home Depot, drilled a few drainage holes, and filled it with potting soil. My amaryllis bulbs are in there for the summer. The tubs are the perfect depth and width for what I need, and my garden bed space is too precious for sleeping bulbs. Sticking tongue out I'll post pictures later.

This is where the amaryllis bulbs are spending their summer. The concrete mixing tubs are the perfect size. I have one more bulb that needs to go in.

As you can see, one starter to bloom after it was planted outside.

Great idea. SS.!!
Those tubs are only $5 or $6. Are they deep enough for the bulbs and roots?
I just used one of these tubs at my "Mother's Day "potting flowers for Mom" Workshop.
I had all the soil in there for the kids to shovel out of.
Then I rinsed it out--dried it and put it back on the floor.

Here is my table--all nice and neat--before the 70+ kids came and went,
See it on the right on the table?

Here are half the hearts on sticks I made. Did 110 total

This is the sign I made years ago. Still drag it out for this event.
This was the 6th year i did this.

Adorable little girl!

Yes, the tub is the perfect depth. I want the roots to grow wide, not deep, since the indoor containers they'll be transplanted in are also pretty shallow.

SSG, instead of a concrete mixing tub, think I could use a kitty litter pan?

I like the concrete mixing tub for the super low price. Big Grin But a cheap kitty litter pan would probably work just as well!

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
SS--

I have a question re using the Concrete mixing tub. I DO think it is a great idea.
My Q.
--where do you then put the tub with all the bulbs in it?
--Just on the ground? Like your lawn?
--In a flower bed? where there is access to it being on top of garden soil?
--On a solid surface--like one's deck? WHERE???

I have NEVER EVER grown out my Amaryllis in any kind of soil.
I realize the benefits of it--and I think I need some help this year to make them thrive.
Potting outside may be the answer.

When do you dig them up, to pot up for blooming in the house, (do you???)
AND--assuming that the bulbs have grown a lot of new roots--do yu just
jam all the roots in a pot and bring the Ams. indoors? Or prune the roots?

Mine have all done well in the past few years. I am sure I have shared photos
of them all blooming...especially, how well the 5 bulbs in the big, old, large, pot have done
being that the same bulbs in the same pot were already blooming wonderfully
in 2005.
This was not the first time I root-pruned them.
Their roots DO get straggly and all over the place. Why did mine ot bloom as well this year?

I confess--that I may have not watered them as much as I should.
Same issue with my CC's--and any other plants that spend their winters under my
big LR window. Out of sight--Out of mind....Some of these can be in rock-hard soil
for lack of watering. Then i do--and hope there has been NO damage because of it.
Whistling
Today--I just saw that most of my Streps. were blooming. How could I miss this???
The soil in these pots was also bone dry. As were all my Spider plants in HB's---
my CC's--my Easter Cactus, and anything else on the shelves al throughout the house..

Amazing--that these all survive anyway.--BUT--i am sure the blooming suffers because of it.
HOW can I be so ignorant of MY houseplants??????????????? Thumbs down
HOW can they survive and grow and bloom in spite of this??? Thumbs up

HMMMMMMMM--a good topic for discussion??? G.

I put mine on my patio. I don't have any space for such a large container in the actual garden. Every bit of space has been taken up!

Mine's not in soil either. Just pine bark-base potting mix. I wanted to give them enough space for their pups without having to plant them in the ground.

I'll be trying something new this fall. I'm going to plant multiple bulbs in a wide, decorative container. The roots won't need that much trimming since they'll be in shallow containers this summer.

Fabulous Aldi had some pretty nice looking kitty litter pan few weeks ago, but not as deep as a mixing tub, maybe not deep enough for this.

I can never bear to yank the Amaryllis early enough to force them for XMas.
Plant it and they will come.

SS--Thanks for your information. I might give it a try???
I may line up a few cinder blocks and put the tray on those.
I have plenty of cinder blocks in front of the raised bed. That is where
I usually set my AMS pots on for the season.
They were just too long indoors. Many leaves just yellowed and I pulled them off.

I don't think root-pruning would cause so many issues. I have done it before.
SO-I am willing to await until all the bulbs re-grow more roots and, I think,
everything will be OK. That is how I deal with issues--i wait it out and don't fusss
over things.
Like--my "Prince Yaku" Rhodo.....Everyone said--"toss it! it is dead!!!
I planted it and watered it and it lived. This is year #3 and--it is now blooming.
Having faith and a lot of patience pays off. G.

1--Here is where my Ams. sit for the summer. May as well group some of the blocks
and set the tub on them.

The concrete mixing troughs are great! I've been usung a couple -- without holes -- on the light shelf to "wake up"amaryllises, dahlias, and now caladiums. When the amaryllises started sending up a flower stalk, they got potted and brought upstairs... They tend to wake at different rates, so blooms are spread out all winter this way. You can speed them up with heat and slow them down by putting the tray on the cool concrete floor.

I'm thinking of burying a no-hole trough or two for plants that like it really moist. For just a few bulbs, the oil change pans from the dollar store are really great, too. I used them as deep saucers under indoor containers this past winter.

The black concrete mixing tubs are much more durable than kitty litter pans. Strong, unbreakable, and do not deteriorate from long exposure to sunlight. Will last your entire gardening career, outliving numerous litter pans.

That's what I use under the GH benches for taros and such overwinter. I just use wood shims to keep them off the floor. Smiling I do have one that got a hole and I will need to replace next year. I have 2 more that I used under the hens roost to collect droppings to mix in the compost. Is there any question why I have such great compost? Hilarious!

I didn't have the heart Lovey dubby to dump the house plant we've had since Jamie was born and I'd thought we'd lost. Sad It was part of a "dish" garden delivered to Holly in the hospital. So I left the pot sit among the other plants in the GH, lo and behold it has sprouted a number of new shoots and seems to be growing well. Hurray! Hurray!
