Wonder which it is, Neal? Probably some of both! I looked for peonies with unusual blooms this year as well as some with HUGE blooms. Finally got Mammoth Rose--I've been chasing that one around for a few years. It hasn't made it to me yet, supposed to have been shipped on Tuesday so maybe today! We're flying out this morning so I probably won't know until Monday, though.
Did you notice all of the unusual blooms were developed by Roy Klehm, or him and someone else as a team?

Annette, the roots from GW look wonderful! Wish that I have more bed space to plant more peonies cultivars.

Liz and Neal, I too was looking at the Pink Flying Saucer. I heard that its flower is huge! Mammoth Rose sounds like a huge flower too! I have never heard of it nor had seen it offered anywhere before, Liz!

I haven't received it yet, Kousa! Ordered it from http://www.peonygarden.net/vie... . Talked to the owner 2 weeks ago, should've gotten them by now. I'll call him again this weekend to see what the deal is. I don't remember where I saw it the first time but had to have it, sure hope this guy works out. He's one of the places that only take check/money order so I might be out the cost of several peonies! I'll let you know if they do come in and what they look like.

Also, got the growing from seed literature you emailed, thanks! Working 12 hour shifts over the weekend so probably won't get to read it for another week....want to be able to take my time! Thank you!

I ordered some peonies from Idlewild Farm this spring but received an email saying that they were not sure whether they would have the peonies that I ordered available. They said they would contact me in the fall to let me know. Well, I got an email from them last week and they said that my peonies are available and they will send them out this week. I am so excited to add these new peonies to my collection. I ordered Golden Wheel, Purple Silk, and Zhao's Garden Pink Peonies from them. They also said that they gave me a free gift tree peony with my order. As a result, I did not place an order with Klemn's this year. Hopefully, I get some blooms from these new peonies next year. I have read somewhere that Zhao's Garden Pink Peony has a delicious fragrance. I hope to find out next year!

Hey kousa, thanks for mentioning Idlewild Farms, I just visited their website, and they've got some beautiful, reasonably priced tree peonies. They have been saved to my FAVORITES.

Got the roots from Peony Garden today, won't have time to unpack and plant until Friday, though. Sometimes work gets in the way....

Wow! Liz, you have will power! I can't receive a box of plant material without opening it immediately, I'm like a 3 year old with a wrapped present! LOL

Don't have much choice! It's too dark here to plant before I go to work or after I get home, have to wait for a day off. Wish it was otherwise, hate seeing them sitting there in the box!

Liz, don't feel bad. My GH Wild peonies are still sitting in the box, but I opened the box, and I check on them periodically to make sure the pips are not drying out. I just haven't had the time to to plant them.

My Idlewild Farm peonies order had arrived. The roots of the herbaceous peonies look decent, average size. But the gift tree peony is spectacular! It has 3 big stems and the root system is massive. This is the biggest tree peony that I ever planted since I started growing them. Mary, you are right. I definitely scored on this purchase. Big Grin This is definitely the place to buy tree peonies. I think I may get a few more next year if I can find more space to fit them.

Here is what the bonus tree peony looks like:

Those look good to me. I don't believe I've ever seen a bare root tree peony. I thought those were typically propagated by grafting onto herbaceous peony rootstock, but that looks more like its own roots. Looks like a great plant!

Hi Frank. They have not updated their website and I did note this to the owner. They said that they will be updating the website this summer because right now they are busy prepping plants for the Philadelphia Flower Show. They said that anyone wishes to purchase the peonies should contact them via email though their shipping for this year is over.

Those are gorgeous roots. I got one from A&D, a tree peony. It was some late in arriving for me, but no problem planting it. They said they were waiting to receive this one and I would be pleased to see that it was worth at least twice what I paid. And indeed it was a really good one. About like yours. It is called Shimane Cho Juraku.

For those who may be into the tree peony culture, this is an interesting site from where many of the USA vendors receive their peonies for retail sales. The many names for tree peonies is interesting. http://www.epeony.com/
