Yes, they're great. Zinnias are very easy from seed. And harvested profusion seeds come true from seeds. The offspring look just like the parent plant, same color.

I agree Yes, we are enablers, but in a good way.

I like the seed suppliers that @RickCorey listed...he buys from them and I get my share of his seeds through the Piggy Swap. Rolling on the floor laughing

I am hopeless seed fanatic, when I'm not saving seeds I'm on here reading about it. After doing mostly veggies and perennials, this summer I fell lin lov with a few annuals like zinnias and marigolds. The marigolds I've been using for the past few years are bushy French varieties from saved seeds, but the zinnias were commercial seed California Giant. Zinnias are still going strong even now, so nice to have some blooms, our weather is warm enough but the perennials that I grow have mostly quit blooming. Saving seeds from the double pinks and oranges that we're my favorite, but I guess this doesn't guarantee those colors because they cross pollinate with each other. That is the fun of seed collecting, you never know what youll get. Somewhere I found this list of open pollinate zinnias, which means if you grew them in isolation they would be stable and produce the same offspring. However, I plan to grow several kinds so will end up with mongrel seeds. I don't think this list is complete, there may be other OP varieties.
OP zinnias:
Bright Jewels'
'Canary Bird'
*'Candy Cane'
* 'California Giant'
'Lilac Queen'
'Lilliput'
'Miss Wilmott'
* 'Persian Carpet'
'State Fair Mix'
'Cut n Come Again'

I've been collecting seeds too. I have heirloom tomatoes seeds drying now on plates. I took a bunch of seeds from a super tall two-toned pale pink/burgundy center hollyhock, lady in red salvia, coral nymph salvia, Yvonnes salvia, Coronado hyssop, red okra, Tarahumara popping sorghum. I'm sure I'll gather some other seeds too this weekend.

You guys have me thinking about zinnia. I really loved a new zinnia this year called Queen Red Lime, but I'm thinking that it won't come true from seed. I could always give it a try.

I saw a post for garlic chives and for shiso perilla. I've never had to collect seeds from them. They grow back reliably every year for us. I have collected them for swaps though.

I used to love the piggy swaps on DG. I still have a closet full of seeds!

I want to know about the Tarahumara popping sorghum?
Does it grow like popping corn and is it edible?

Seed swaps are great! I just go in the Canadian ones,
as phytosanitary certificates are required for seeds into USA.
I have done the NARGS one several times, but as I have a closet full of seeds too----
I am trying to restrain myself from going into swaps.

Judy, I had some seed for a white med size marigold that I planted a couple of years ago. I didn't save them and now I cannot find any but the lg white marigold. Do you have any of those? Plus, I save my daylily seeds! Even if they are bee crosses.

Hi Caroline, yes sorghum is edible. This is the first year I've tried growing it and I really liked the plants. I'm drying the seeds now and have a sheet pan full. I may try popping some. The seeds are much smaller than corn kernels so it must be pretty small popped - I'm just guessing though - have never tried it yet

I am saving the hybrid zinna, Rose Queen, just to see what happens. Unfortunately I grow LOTS of zinnias in one or two LONG rows so they cross but I save the seeds anyway. Usually you will get a lot of pinks. Seems a lot revert to pink, but i also get some interesting volunteers.

I know some people don't like saved seeds if they aren't pure so it reduces the number of seeds I have available for seed swapping, but I understand their reasons.

@wind excellent list of seeds, especially the coral nymph salvia. Been into salvia lately. Now 'fess up, are they all from your garden or from gardens you've passed? I recently pinched some coleus for cuttings from public display, tee Hee. That queen red lime zinnia is gorgeous, go ahead and see what the seeds come up,with, maybe something even more gorgeous. Love zinnias. Thanks to the zinnias (and butterfly bush) my backyard is a way station for the monarchs that are passing through this week as they migrate south. Have you grown any other zinnias this summer?

@bluegrassmom never heard of white marigolds! Ugh, I went to another window to look them up and lost all the text in this window so I've typed everything up to here twice. The white ones are very pretty, the pix I saw looked vanilla-y or antique white. I'd like to try that.

You do know about the piggy seed swap on cubits right? If this link doesn't work it's mentioned on a thread in the seed trading forum.

all the salvia seeds are from our gardens Smiling Today is sunny and sort of warm actually - a beautiful day here in NJ. I'm going to take a stroll in the gardens later to see if there are any other seeds to collect. I guess I'll take in some of Zinnia Queen Red Lime. If it reverts to a pink of some sort that's fine too. Never met a zinnia I didn't like

I didn't know about the piggy swap on Cubits... thanks for the link. good to know about it. I checked it out and saw a lot of familiar faces. I'm going to avoid the temptation at the moment, but if I get the urge to trade seeds now I know where to go. Seed swaps are really great and I especially loved the piggy swap. Did it for several years

My first time here. I'm looking to share my favorite, easy to save seed from our "magic beans". A plant grown by my family for 20+ years these are Lablab Purpueus, a climbing hyacinth. We've grown them upwards of 10' on a trellis. At its peak it will produce lavender flowers that eventually turn into soft seed pods. These pods turn crisp and brown and inside of them are more seeds you can harvest for friends! The flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Here is San Antonio they will grow and produce a second round of flowers and pods. They will die in a freeze. They will self sow. In this photo the hyacinth is to the right of the fall aster, you can see the young seed pods-they are purple. The only seeds I'm over-wintering is cardinal vine and the one described above.

Looks like a beautiful plant...one I'm not familiar with in our zone. I love the color of the blossoms on it. I think it's awesome that your family has grown it for so many years. Thanks for sharing that photo.

Today I read an article in the Owensboro paper, that they have a seed library for people to try seeds without having to buy them.
I guess there is some regulation on how many you could checkout. A unique idea to me is this going on in other parts of the US?
