I thought I'd start a new thread for October since no one has done so yet. I'll start out with a couple of pic's from this morning.

Northern Cardinal (photo taken through the kitchen window) and a Dove perched on the fence:

I don't know if this is the same Anhinga that I've been seeing lately but a few minutes ago it was perched on the same shrub across from my backyard:

Those Anhinga's do have long necks ... it's fun to watch them twist and turn when they are preening!

Replaced my hummingbird feeder with a suet cage yesterday, only to have a little hummer come flying at my window in a rather questioning way... I usually don't get any year-round hummers, but am happy to put the feeder back out to see if maybe that will change.

Thanks Lin! I would have started a new thread but I have absolutely no birds in the yard!! Not one bird has been on the suet yet. I am sure that will change, but meanwhile I just have to wait.

The Masked Lapwings babies hatched and the parents brought them down yesterday. They have four. They are on my lawn at the moment and I cannot go into the garden. The young have to get used to me. I am going to worry about them crossing the road. Sometimes they don't make it. But the adults are very good parents.

One got stuck up against my elevated bed and the parents couldn't get it out. I had to catch it when they were not sighted and put above the obstruction or there would have been hell to play.

Also yesterday, the parents brought the baby Bush Stone-curlews up. These are the ones from down the hill in front of the house. The bubs will keep their distance for a few weeks though. The ones from up the hill have not hatched yet.

Count the legs.

Juvenile White-crowned sparrow was preening in the sun, captured a funny pose as he was about to take off. Hilarious!

Oh, that is so cute! I love the little sparrows and that White-crowned reminds me a lot of the little Chipping Sparrow that we see here in Florida from Dec. - Feb. This photo is of a little Chipping Sparrow last February:

Oregon junco on left and some sort of sparrow (?) on the right. Didn't get the front view so no clue what the breast looks like. Pretty coloring though.
