Lol. This is him then getting up because I got too close. Which was annoying because I was trying to get a photo where his head was not hidden by the grass.

I just find that so strange! And funny too. One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. Is that how they sleep? Or is that just it "playing Possum"? Or is it just resting? I swear it looks dead & stiff like rigor mortis has set in. Do the adults do that too or just the juveniles?
Do these birds live their lives on the ground or do they ever actually fly? Where do they roost at night?

Ann, it was just playing possum. This, however, is the first time I have seen one laid out like that. Normally the babies sit on their knees and lay forward to play hide in the open. The adults usually stand motionless. They give a low grating call if you get too close but if you do not heed, they then scream and hold their wings out stretched and tail fanned. This increases their size about 10-fold. The act scares dogs senseless and me too.

They can fly very well but prefer to run. They are nocturnal and roost during the day, usually in the shade of a bush or tree.

I call Pearl a little devil all the time or I say you're a devil & you know it, things to that effect. One day last fall I came home with that thinking I could put it on her. I called them devil horns & I can only guess that she was so cool with it because of knowing the word devil. She loves when I go to put them on her & sits in front of me waiting for me to put them on her.
