I know, Sheryl, he signed up on the iris forum, but talking about greenhouses. That's fine, but somehow we need to get Rick hooked on irises, if he isn't already.

That's our job here, Rick, getting people hooked on irises!

Hello again and thanks for the advice Sheryl. Smiling Hopefully by March I will have a greenhouse. Still looking at various designs to build. Here in Montana sometimes it can stay pretty cold even into May. I do think Iris are very nice and my wife likes them as well. If all goes well I will try to post some pics of the greenhouse. Good night to all. Smiling

Rick, welcome - This past summer I was given a bunch of 5 gallon buckets. I drilled holes on the bottom, added some gravel for drainage and dirt, then planted tomatoes (success) hot & sweet peppers (success) parsley (mucho success) along with basil (success, but died off in the fall even in the garage) So for sure you can grow those items in buckets.

I also have daylilies in kitty litter bins.

I pulled everything into the garage this fall. The peppers & tomatoes are now dying off, but continued to ripen their fruit through the fall.

The daylilies went back outside because they got some type of insect infestation (that did not bother my veggies & herbs) My Iris which were planted in buckets & kitty litter bins all found homes in my yard so none of them have to overwinter this year.

And Polly, yes, I was at DG. Decided not to pay any more. ~Jan

Hi Jan and thank you for the information regarding planting in buckets and kitty litter bins. If all goes well I should be building a greenhouse in March or hopefully sooner unless finances suggest otherwise. I appreciate everyone's help and I probably stumbled into the wrong forum but I do thank all of you for the warm welcome and I will grow some Irises as they are very beautiful. My wife is skeptical about putting money into a greenhouse but I am considering building a small geodesic dome covered in greenhouse poly so should be very economical (hopefully). I still have to figure out how to do a doorway and put in some vents. There is another type of structure that caught my eye that's like a geodesic dome but has a lower ceiling. I will try to provide a few pics when it is finished. I figure I can also start plants early and then transfer them to the outside garden later. I am still fairly new to gardening so I really do appreciate your wisdom and expertise. Thanks again! Smiling Rick

Welcome Rick - I think someone (maybe the daylily forum? or was it a completely different forum - I can't remember Confused posted how they took an old unused dog kennel and made a greenhouse from that by covering it with plastic. Wish I could remember where I read that! ~Jan

The best DIY GH I've ever heard of was the frame from an old swing-set with plastic over it.

I am bob and I am coming from Dave's. I have tried Cubit's but just wasn't comfortable. I work full time as a Dir. of Social Services and love gardening as my past time. I am heavy into iris, orchids, orchid cactus hybrids, and day lilies and looking forward to retirement when I can spend more time getting dirty. I really think there are many similarities, especially in the large, colorful blooms. I have a 22' glasshouse that I'm getting ready to double in size as plants continue to grow.

I really enjoy trading iris and can't wait for bloom time. I've been able to meet many new friends this way.

Welcome! Hi Bob - Glad you made the trek over here! There's a lot going on over here on ATP, although the irises forum has been a bit slow and now appears to be getting more lively again now that spring is just around the corner. Our daylily forum is very lively pretty much all the time, though. So enjoy!

Edit: By the way, can you tell us the name of that gorgeous pink in your avatar? Love it!

Welcome Bob.

We're still going strong on Cubits, but it seems there are different subjects here and there, so I enjoy both. Glad you like it here. Things will pick up in a month or so on both sites.

After 9 years and 50 weeks working at Social Services I can truly relate to the gardening for relaxation. Definitely the most stressful job I ever had. How many years until retirement? I hope your state is like mine and allows retirement at an early age.

Hello,
I am Teresa Barrow or better known as bluegrassmom on DG. I live in KY with my non gardening husband. We have 4 grown children, The twins are in college, so the flower fund is slim lol. I have many more daylilies than iris, but iris was my first love. I grow some TB, L, J, and a few Sibs.

I also grow hosta, but I am running out of shade so I am going to the minis. I am on FB if anyone needs a gardening friend.

Welcome Teresa...I'm mostly an iris and hosta person who is running out of room. I've ordered several different Mouse Ears this year. I also love DL's but only grow a few. One good thing about ATP is that I can enjoy the pictures of things that others grow.

Thank you, Polly
Yes, I have been on DG for yrs! Paul, do you have Lakeside Dimpled Darling? It is so cute.

Does anyone have reblooming iris? I am trying to add a few that really rebloom.
Japanese iris is something I would like to add more of. I traded a few dls for the ones I have and I have 3 types that are unmarked but still just as beautiful!

I remember when I was DG but did not pay May of 2009 because it was at time getting a little out of control for me.

I enjoy ATP and Cubits both.

Glad you came over we have many people here that are transplants from DG

I have a fairly large collection of rebloomers that I know for a fact that reblooms in 7 to 10 but never can guarantee that they will rebloom in other zones.
