Can anyone help identify this orchid for me. The flowers are almost black. It was sent as a gift a year ago. No blooms when I got it; and by Christmas it was gorgeous. I lost the tag unfortunately and don't even know the grower. There are no spikes currently on it; I've withheld water and it is looking healthy.

I don't know exactly which one it is, but I would look at Fredclarkeara After Dark as in here:

Wow, I'd never heard of a black orchid and it is stunning! I googled and the only one I found is the same one Ursula noted.

Yes, I love that orchid. My favorite one is Fdk. Midnight Lace. I suspect they are dormant this time of year.

Well, after searching and searching (I really believed I had the tag somewhere), I did find it.

The black orchid is Monnierara Millenium Magic "Witchcraft" FCC/AOS. My son had ordered it for me from Orchids Limited in Plymouth, Minnesota.

I stopped keeping tags in my orchids a long time ago (after we had the three back-to-back hurricanes), I didn't have many then and thought they were safe where I had stashed them outside. Wrong ! Actually, I found most of the orchids scattered around my back yard; out of the pots and, of course, no tags. I do try to keep the tags in a book now and also write it in a binder I keep. This black orchid ID wasn't anywhere I thought I might have put it. I will have to change my tactics !

I've just plodded on ever since, adding to my collection. When there's a really big storm or winds headed our way (no hurricanes again thank goodness) I now put them in the garage, the living room, the family room and some in my husband's shed which is supposed to be hurricane proof !

Question ? How would I post a picture of this on the plant database. All I know after looking it up (from my tag) is that it's a hybrid from the three orchid families of; Catasetum, Cycnoches and Mormodes. I wouldn't know what other information to fill in.

It is!
Sorry Elfie, I just realized we never answered your question.
I should hang my head in shame, but I have never entered Orchids into the database, I really need to take a closer look......

I think you just click on Plant Database, then select the link that says, "Add a Plant to the database" and then fill out the necessary info...then someone approves it....but in my experience you have to go back once it's approved and submit your photo to go with it...then THAT gets approved....but maybe I'm doing it the hard way? I don't know! I've submitted a cryptanthus and an orchid that way, seemed to work.

I just talked to Fred Clark on the phone. He has one Midnight Lace only and it has a seed pod on it. Once he harvests the seeds, probably in April, the plant is mine. Can't wait! nodding
