Just wanted to get this forum going with some COLOR and fun!

I have several daylilies blooming although some aren't opening completely compared to my last garden, (I moved north of San Francisco 3 months ago) we have more of a coastal influence now so the nights rarely go over 50°, many daylilies need more humidity and heat to open nicely.
I have many roses getting ready to go into another flush, if the temps stay mild enough, they will look great! Most of my 600+ potted plants are still in pots from the move, I am gradually planting as I decide what goes where.
Purchased several lily bulbs this year through co-ops so many of them are just starting to bloom.

ooh I'm jealous of your daylilies! I left mine behind when I moved I was told they dont do well here, not enough sun and very little humidity

Yes, they are like roses, need at least 1/2 day sun.

Really? roses do fine up here...at least until the deer find them

This hydrangea did not get any 'blueing' added to it this year and I much preferred the blended blue and purples that it had when I bought it. The pink is a bit too strident for me....it will soon have some 'stuff' added to it to correct that coloring..lol..



This hydrangea is a surprise. It was one of those 'Half dead at the grocery store for $.99' deals. I'm hoping that it will respond to 'blueing' also....

My hygrangeas are all deep blue and purple. Of course, everyone here wants the pinks and reds, but I prefer the blues, its easier to find a good red than blue and the blue of hydrangeas is a wonderful blue. I have my black leafed ones blooming, I will try and get a picture of them, very cool they are.

I am really liking this site. I am wondering around like I did when I first found Dave's. I like the format and I like the mail thing too.

I'm wondering why the pinks and reds are favored there....just because we're used to always seeing the blues? Or do the pinks and reds brighten up rainy days?

Hydrangea quercifolia / Oakleaf Hydrangea....




This guy is planted in a spot that's totally, totally unimproved..rotten soil that was covered by asphalt for many years. He seems to be doing okay, this is second year in the ground.

An interesting tidbit. Rebecca has a nursery in Gold Beach and her uncle is a very, very experienced gardener. She mentioned to me that he gathers pieces of asphalt when he comes across them as they are good for the plants.

Becca, does he bury these...or set them around on top of the soil beneath plants, what? I mean, I've got stacked peices of asphalt that I might start unstcking and hiding beneath some of the shrubs...

A very sprightly peppermint striped Ivy Geranium...It was given to me by SoCal / Donna, and has been languishing in a pot but this week it is going to find it's proper home in the garden where it can shine...

Sherry, that will be a special geranium now, a fond remembrance of a special friend. I have had mine for a few years now in a pot and it's a great bloom machine. I don't even fertilize it, just water. It's was in mostly full sun at my former house, now it gets late afternoon sun on the front porch.




I bought this oakleaf hydrangea, 'Vaughn's Lillie', while living at my Mom's, it's still in a 20 gal pot and has these huge blooms that start out with a lot of green. I have a spot already picked out for it, in fact, I think I will get it planted today!
I took these shots in mid April, I have a couple of huge head sized blooms on it right now too.

That's a beauty! I wonder if mine will do that well if fertilized, etc.....everything here for awhile has not gotten full care..everything gets a 'little',nothing gets a 'lot'..lol... Mine is Sykes' Dwarf, only gets to 4-5 ft tall. I did do cuttings for my own use and have 3 smaller ones in the ground now also. I've been digging out the seaweed extract,and the fish emulsion and the Ironrite, etc. to give everything some proper care this week.

I have Sykes Dwarf and one called perhaps Snow queen? Since they are both babies, they are about the same size. My uncle just sets the asphalt here and there, actually he puts it on a big weed, it does deterioate when exposed to sun and rain and crumbles. He may be crazy, it may not be good for plants, but he is usually right.

I am spraying my rhodendrons. I was supposed to start in June but we had the weather, anyway, today is the day. I have to saturate the soil around the stem and then soak each leaf and this stuff really stinks. And I have a lot of rhodys, I spent 2 hours and am about 1/4 done and still have the ones in the ground. We get nasty weevils that eat the leaves and the larvea eat the roots and kill the plant. I have to spray 3 times, 10 days apart then I am done unless I see damage, then once again.

I had Sykes Dwarf in a pot, it dried up in the heat last summer when I missed watering it while getting ready to sell the house.
I also have a small Hydrangea quercifolia 'Little Honey', beautiful gold leaves. It's still in a pot as well and I need to fertilize to get it growing faster I think.

rebecca, where are you located? and what zone? I don't see anything on your member info to get a clue. If you don't want to disclose the exact location, maybe a state or zone?

Glad to see everyone here! This will be one of my favorite places to lurk... and maybe come out of hiding once in a while. My gardens blooms are diminishing, except for the shasta daisies - wish it would look like spring all summer long! Oh, forgot about the hydrangeas, hosta, bee balm, shrub roses, gaillardia, lavender, geraniums, penstemon, fuchsia, daylilies - guess I should stop complaining & start deadheading! - now, I remember why I love CA! LOL! Thinking that it's probably time to trim the salvia's a bit, so they can show me some fresh blooms - what do you think Sherry?

Hey, lizzi! Good to see you here! Things are looking tired here all of a sudden. Everything was so lush after our winter rains and then the heat and everything is bedraggled...me too. I still have grasses that didn't get cut back and roses that need deadheading, etc. There can be too much of a good thing.....
BTW...OT...I just realized that Costco carries Rudi's GF multigrain bread! WooHoo. I had some before and it wasn't really great...all of a sudden I love it. I can't tell you how much toast I've eaten in the last couple of weeks...lol. Simple pleasures.

Oh, pooh. I didn't get my beets planted..... My early green beans were great..the ones now have been hit badly by spider mites. I got a late start with the veggies...

I missed the comments here, I forgot to put this on my watched thread list.

I am located in Pistol River which is between Gold Beach and Brookings OR, we are right on the coast near the border of CA. There is a narrow strip here that is zone 9 so I can grow almost everything I could when in Santa Clara, CA, except for a few things that will not bloom because we do not get that much heat here. Last summer we only had a couple of days that were close to 70, this year so far we have been in the 70's a couple of times, but now we are cloudy, overcast and down in the 60's.

My daylilies are really stunning this year. I was close to buying some more but I have over 200, mostly older varieties, then had to think about where to put them, etc so decided I have enough. I love those pictures.

Very glad to see you again Lizzi, I always enjoy your comments. And am so curious where you will end up moving.
