I have had Ancient Secrets for a while, and it just finally bloomed last year. It was being crowded a bit by some others. It's a nice one though. I got Grand Coquette last year. I'm hoping to see it this summer. It's different for sure, and that's what I liked about it.

I agree I always wanted to get a few arilbreds, but i don't know much about them or whether they are northern hardy? I like Rivers of Babylon, also.

I *think* the hardiness depends on the % of Aril blood, Ken. Lady Mohr(Salbach '43) has done well here, and I planted several more this year....some I expect won't make it.....but I think it's worth the try, anyway.

OGB- (quarterbreds) are the most successful here. Also aril with regalia blood, are better than the oncos although not as spectacular.

I'm not sure if it's really the cold, so much as the "wet" that bothers them.....I've read that they like it very dry during their 'dormant period'.

Wet is truly a menace. I try to put a bit of sand in their soil.

Our "un-amended" soil is quite sandy, so I put them in an Un-amended area of the bed. Plus, I planted them, on a slightly elevated mound of soil, and left the rhizome totally "above ground", and then added pure silica sand (about 1") to bring the level up to the top of the rhizome. Hopefully, they will survive ! If I have any luck , I'd LIKE to try a pure aril, or two. I'm thinking "pea-gravel", 3"-4" deep, over a sandy base, in an area that gets protection from the North, and West winds, with a full-sun exposure, MAY allow it. ( I love to experiment Sticking tongue out )

The beards on Color Bazaar remind me of candy corn. I really really like Color Bazzaar and the seedling from Superstition Garden!
