Bonnie... you are correct the picture was of the Hager seedling I wanted to show how bright it was, they crossed it with Golden Panther pictured above and got Molten Flame which is not as intense in color but pretty close in the garden it is bright and they greatly improved the form on it and added ton's of Ruffles Smiling which is right up my alley here.

Why I love the color of the Hager seedling the 1st thunderstorm we got here in Iowa it would be gone but the substance and good stalk on Molten Flame should hold up a lot better in this climate. I am hoping that I can cross it with some Ghio blood (My Beloved, Enjoyment, Magical,) and bring out that intense color in one or two generations with even more ruffles Smiling . I am looking for the best Oranges to work with and this one fits in that category.

I will be very interested to see what comes out of your crosses, Brad. Keeping the 'heart' of the iris light and orange in order to capture sunlight while encouraging ruffles and perfect form is quite a challenge but one that I think your up to. And yes it is very important that an iris stand up to a bit of a storm. What makes me fret is an iris that goes down when its ruffles get heavy with rain. Decadence is one that will do this but I still grow it because some irises are worth the extra work of staking them and the unique color in the Hager seedling iris would certainly make it worth that effort too.

Decadence has never required staking here, and it's out in the open.

I always stake the ones in the front garden and no problems. Here is a photo from the clump growing along the ridge in the back

before the shower
Thumb of 2014-12-16/grannysgarden/2fefd2

and after the shower
Thumb of 2014-12-16/grannysgarden/98642f
Sorry about the quality of the photos
The irises growing along the ridge do not get sun in winter, then get full sun all day in summer, do not get nutrients as they would just wash downhill, live in a small pocket of soil, and make rhizomes the size of potatoes, fans that look like something prehistoric and the most lush blooms. All of the irises planted there are overflows from other places in the 'official' garden and they always outbloom them.

I have a light orange BB seedling which I am working with. Every once & awhile it goes out of class for height so not up for introduction.

I don't think I have one on the computer. I am not very good at photography & learning how to do new camera. It has light orange petals & a bright beard. I can look tomorrow.

Here is one of Rick's 2014 introductions.

It is "LAVENDER MOONBEAMS"

Unguicularis--12", ML--very fragrant. Unguicularis bloom from November through March and are generally recommended for USDA zones 7 and higher. Normal species unguicularis have somewhat narrow petals, but in my breeding program, I'm developing very large flowers and very wide petals. This flower is usually about 5" across. Color is a pale lavender due to one of its parents being I.unguicularis 'Alba'.

I used to have some I. unquicularis.. They always bloomed at Thanksgiving. I remember there being a few named cultivars out there, but I don't remember a color like 'Lavender Moonbeams'.
