I'm a little behind on keeping up with all the threads... Pruning season has arrived and I'm spending most of the days outside just hoping to keep up with it all and stay ahead of the weeds. A couple of the roses beat me up today Glare

I emailed Superstition my list, and he responded with the prices and asked if there were any changes or deletions.. He's sending an invoice in a couple weeks, and then I'll send him a check.

Marilyn, when you went there, did you buy the fertilizer they have made up?

Yes, it's too heavy to ship, so I bought it when I was there. I'll buy more again this year.

So @Henhouse, Sherry, how do you know what they have? Are you basing it on previous lists or catalogs? He wrote me on FB that they will have a new descriptive catalog ready around Feb. 1st but they are already taking orders.

Personally I think they are shooting themselves in the foot by being exclusively on FB. Many won't ever join and there is confusion about how to order or what they carry. They don't have anything written on the About page with info like that. Guess I'll wait until the catalog comes out.

I agree, Sue. I have been to their site but after perusing the photos and finding no information on pricing or shipping or ordering..... I went to another site and ordered the iris. I know you cant get their new intros at another site but I was discouraged and did not order from them. This year I have asked for a catalog. I don't mind comparing the catalog with the FB site photos.

I don't believe so. The physical catalog doesn't have pictures, never has to my knowledge. They used to host all of the pictures of their irises on a photo sharing website (can't remember which one?), but moved them to FB a year or two ago. I assume the catalog will be along later this month or in early February.

It's impossible to say which commercial iris grower is the "best" because there are so many that are so good, and often for different reasons. However, Superstition is certainly at the top of the list. I actually feel a bit guilty about the orders I've placed with them in recent years, they sent far more than was merited based on the relatively small amount of money spent. But, their prices are so reasonable and the way they handle bonuses is so generous (if you include a reasonably long list of suggestions, bonuses will always be something you wanted), that's just how it worked out.

Hmmm....I had pretty much decided to just shop around elsewhere, because I can find plenty to keep me happy at just about any of the good sources. But after reading Kent's post, I believe I'll go ahead and request a calalog/price list.

That is an arilbred iris. Difficult in some places.

The catalog comes out in Feb. They have 'historic' irises which usually sell out if you don't get them first. Then a good number of tall bearded from different hybridizers, some median & arils & arilbreds. It is well worth a look, espcially when you are looking for different colors for a mixed garden. We have ordered from them for about 10 years.

I spent hours browsing their fb albums, definitely requesting a price list! They do offer a lovely assortment of historics.

Rick & Roger moved their Iris photos to Facebook after their old service decided to charge a fee to access them. You do not need to be a "Facebook" member to see their pictures. They are not "High Tech" computer wise and don't really see a need to go that root. They use Facebook as a portal to show some pictures of what they carry and to blog about their Iris experience. The old site did not show a complete set of pictures either if memory holds. They are so low tech, that when I emailed them and suggested they just send me a PDF file of their catalog rather than send me a hard copy (I thought this would save them the expense of postage) they said they were not sure they knew how to do that. Further more, they use a local printer to make their catalogs and they needed to print a minimum number to keep the process worth it to both parties. So it comes in the mail!

One of the reasons they only look at ATP and not join up is that being on more than one platform/media site is too much work. Since they are currently "based" on Facebook, they thought it better to just stay there. This does not mean they will not join us at ATP, that's not clear to me. I do know it just won't be now. I get the impression that they would like to commit fully to any project and aren't sure they can do that with two sites.

Remember, they run a small two man operation on one acre (ok; two acre's but one has a cover crop). Unlike Schreiner's that has hundreds (ok, I don't know how much they have, but is substantially more than two). I found out that their previous customers made orders via email starting January first without the benefit of a catalog. If they have what you want, they let you know and then send a follow up email with the costs. So I joined the ranks of the early orderers (even though this is my first ever order with them). I wanted specific cultivars that they introduced and I did not want to have them fall to the "out of stock" category before I had a chance to order.

I am sure they do not like to lose potential clients/customers, but they have been doing this for a long time this way. It is only recently that the iris world has moved to the Jan 1 order time frame. When I "joined up" in 2009/2010, March was the time ALL of the big houses took orders; after their catalogs had been delivered.

These guys are great to deal with. Just email them with your request and see if they have what you want. They add a lot of new stock every year from all of the "BIG" names. Smiling

Here is their email address!

I too have had great success with Rick and Roger. They are great people; you probably won't find bigger, healthier irises; and they are very generous about bonuses. It's well worth the inconvenience of their low tech setup.

Besides...how do you place orders with Joe Ghio or Keith Keppel...I haven't done that yet, but it seems like they are pretty low tech too.

I will be sending my order (ok, at least the first part of it, till I visit their garden!!) in the next few days. nodding

I just looked at the Superstition Iris Gardens add/delete lists that Arlyn sent me (Thanks!!!). They added about 100 new cultivars for the 2015 season and deleted about 160. So they don't have any pictures for the 100 they added (40% were 2014 intros!) Wow.

I am bummed at the delete list, as there are a bunch I would like to get. Like:

Crowns for Credit
Halloween Halo
Ink Patterns
Let's Romp
Wedding Night
Zlatovlaska
