I'm 100% sure that we'll have freezes left around here. In the hills there always are. Just hoping for mild ones. We're waiting for propane to be delivered, since we're just about out. Normally we would have had enough to get to spring, but this wasn't a normal year.

Our garden club helps maintain a fern bed at the botanical garden. We had a mtg there today. It was the first time I'd seen the fern beds since the freezes. Looks like someone torched them. Some of them may come back, but I think most are toast....
I'm going to be potting some cuttings today...but I'm not moving them very far from the door to the gh!

The reason I asked about the palm is because I have one thats about 5' tall in a pot and I need to repot it into a bigger and heavier pot which will make it almost impossible to move into the greenhouse next year I may have to rethink this one. About a freeze I think we will have at less two more cold snaps, just enought to take out tomatoe plants.

As big as it was, mine was in a fairly small pot ( about 3 gal.) inside a larger decorative one. You may not have to re-pot it just yet.

I bravely fought off hundreds of bees yesterday to carry home a dwarf Meyer's Lemon tree from HD. I know, I know, it's still going to get cold again. I just couldn't help myself. The display smelled divine and most of the lemon trees were filled with tiny fruits. And I'm not exaggerating about the bees! They were thick on the citrus and couldn't have cared less that I was moving among them. I really wanted some of the other fruit trees they had advertised, but they looked like they'd been frozen for a bit...
I'm on my way out to check on the plants in the ghs. I'm thinking of fertilizing the brugmansias today. Last year they were all in bloom before we took the ghs down. I'm hoping to move a few of the larger ones to the back of the garden bed.
And totally off topic....I was attempting to clean the pond a few days ago. The oaks are starting to drop leaves again. I thought I heard a saxaphone behind the small greenbelt (our greenbelt backs to a 10' drop to a ofc complex parking lot). There was a guy sitting on the curb, playing on his lunch hour! I had to get a step ladder to peek over our fence. He played very well. Shortly, he was joined by a woman with a guitar... I had my own concert to listen to! They weren't there the next day, so I figured someone down the hill from us might have complained about the noise. 'But...the following day, just as I was leaving the house for an appt., I could hear them start up again...and I had to leave for my appt.... I'm hoping they continue their "spring concert" just for me next week....

End of Feb, 2010....taking down the hoop house. Brugmansias are 8' tall and blooming.

Yesterday, Feb. 19, 2011....checking the hoop house. Brugs are toast...
Thumb of 2011-02-20/Bubbles/079483

The side panel blew open at the top and cold air rushed in. Most things at ground level were okay. Brugs are pretty much a soggy mess at the tops.

More cold. Last night got to 30.9° Last freeze of the season or one of the last? Yesterday I did something really illogical. I went in a nursery and (gasp!)....yes, I sinned, I bought plants just because I wanted to! Must do penance by trying to repot or plant them.

Well tell us what you bought!
It was 36 here, I think. We left for lake early this morning. (see my post on Unloading the hoop houses) Was a full day. My backyard still looks like a dumping ground.

Milkweeds, purslanes, tomato plants, Blackfoot Daisies and one petunia. At least I didn't go to a "big box" nursery! Big Grin

I need to find milkweeds here. I collected some seeds from DD's garden. Mine didn't come back last year and I didn't replace them. Just got busy with other stuff. I spread the seeds, but think I'll buy a few plants too.
Sounds like you had a good shopping day!

The milkweeds I already had outside are so far showing no signs of life, so I bought Mexican Milkweed. That nursery had two plants in each pot, which I've separated and repotted. So at least I got four plants out of the two pots I bought. I'll try to start some Texas Milkweed seeds I have also. They are cold-hardier than the Mexican Milkweed, but don't know for sure the ones I already had growing will come back. That front that had us 3 days straight in the teens was kind of extreme for here.
