That's a foreign thought for me -- I have planted Irises as late as November, here. Don't think I could do that every year, though..........

The iris I got and planted in Sept last year are bigger and growing faster than the ones I got in July. It may be that the August heat was a bit taxing on the newbies. Not sure. But I plan to plant most of mine in early September this year.

Leslie, that's why I started potting new rhizomes- they often just sit there during the hot, dry time of summer and don't start growing till cooler weather when I plant them directly in the ground. The potted rhizomes took off and started growing fast Smiling

I found the growth of the irises interesting last year also. The ones I planted in early July really didn't put out much growth here last summer. It was a cool summer and I thought they would have grown better.
Now the one I planted in the middle of September, (which is late in my zone) put on more growth than the ones I planted in July. We shall see if they survived the winter here in a couple months. They took hold and were pretty well rooted in.

Hmmm. Maybe the late iris are doing better because they had longer post bloom growth time in the loving care of the vendors before being dug and shipped. I definitely saw a difference with one vendor that I got an early order from and a late order from. All the rhizomes were lovely, but the later ones were larger and had more increases.

That makes a good case for requesting later dig & ship.

As long as you have warm enough falls, then I think so.

Mine will be coming in July and I will pot them and grow them on in part day sun....maybe morning sun. Then they will go into the garden in the fall.

I believe that most of you have far more pots than I do. I am pretty low on them.

I planted many earlier then most years and they did great. I planted many in late July as usual, and they did great, and I got two in September, and one took root, but didn't grow much, the other one was still loose going into winter. Of course that's the one I most want! I hope it makes it. It should as it's been covered with snow most of the winter. I think a lot has to do with both the temps, and the length of time they are out of the soil between dividing and planting. Some that I had that were quite dry took a while to establish. There are just so many variables that it's hard to determine which is causing success or failure. IMHO

This is true. For myself, I simply don't have time to do double work. I struggle to find time to take care of my beds and get new Irises planted. Another step in the process would do me in. But I can see the value in potting up first!!

Oh gads, I added on to my Bugard order. I decided I really couldn't live without Cold Fusion (your fault Grand Cheesehead!) or Plot Line (probably Brad's fault with those pictures!!!).

I think the rest of my money is now going to need to be spent on soil and materials to build another bed.

Hilarious! Probably, Leslie. I am waiting to hear back from Exline and Country Delight on availability. One has to wait for snow clearance (so not any time soon Sticking tongue out ) and the other is away until March.

Also wrote to Chuck Chapman yesterday to see if he knew of a U.S. vendor of his SDB "Spock" Looking at his website, he does ship to the States, but I can't pay the extra shipping.
It’s okay to not know all the answers.

I am guessing many Star Trek related items will be hard to find this year. I have not found Spock in any of my searches so far but will let you know.
