Can you explain what you mean by "sport"? Not heard the term used before. Thanks.

I think he means sport related or sport in the name? Then again, a 'sport' is an offshoot or flower that is different from the others on which it's growing. Lots of new plants are gotten that way.

So with iris, would a sport be an increase that bloomed different than the others? Or did they get seeds? Seems like the odds of a sport producing a viable seed pod would be pretty unlikely.

Leslie, a sport is a vegetative increase, and genetically identical to the parent. Sports can produce seeds, but the seedlings would not be like the parent, just like other hybrids.

A famous one is 'Beverly In White' a sport of pink Beverly Sills. As far as I know it has been used in hybridizing.

Thanks! I thought the odds were way too high for it to produce from seed. Since Arlyn collects sports I take it that they are not too rare of an occurance?

Arlyn, show us your 'sport' bed. I've never seen one.

I got confirmation today from Blue J that Los Coyotes will be my bonus!

Yay Celia!

And I would really like to see some sports, especially with some background, like Lucy gave for Beverly White.

OK, This is "Honorabile"....at least SOME of the "experts "say it is Sticking tongue out , the rest say it is "Sans Souci"....either way, this iris has an obviously unstable gene someplace in it's make-up, because it "sports" quite often.

and this one is "Brown's Mutant"...a *color* sport of Honorabile....size of the flower, height, form, and growth habits are identical, with a difference in color being the only difference.

Thumb of 2015-03-02/crowrita1/9b7bb6

and this one is "Joseph's Coat Katkamier", another color sport

Thumb of 2015-03-02/crowrita1/f82675
and this one is "Sherwin-Wright"

Thumb of 2015-03-02/crowrita1/68b5ac

and there are a couple more (that I have no pics of, as yet Sticking tongue out ) besides "Sport Coat" which is a "new" sport, that has just been registered. Besides "color" sports, there are also "texture sports".....color, form, etc., are the same, but they have a "crepe paper" texture to the flower.(check out "Zua")...and then they MAY throw a "color sport ,also....so the end result is a flower of a different color AND texture(check out "Elizabeth Huntington"). As Lucy mentioned, there is "Beverly In White", as well as several others, that are known to *sport*

That is fascinating to me. I have always loved Joseph's Coat, never knew it was a sport.

Thank You! Arlyn!!
