Thanks Donna!

I live in Florida and unfortunately that pretty tree is no more; we've been leasing that house out since 2011and the yard and plants have not been taken care of. Our tenants moved out a few months ago and we are selling the house. I bought a small quart size Christmas senna at Home Depot this summer for our yard here and it's been blooming for about a month but I still haven't planted it in the ground yet.

Just a warning to Florida gardeners - this plant is considered a Category I invasive exotic by the Florida Exotic Plant Pest Council. http://www.fleppc.org/list/FLE... Also, the Council and the Florida Atlas of Vascular Plants say the name Senna bicapsularis is an excluded name and was misapplied to Senna pendula var. glabrata. So just know they are the same plant if you see them listed. http://www.florida.plantatlas....

If you want to grow a Senna plant, I would recommend the native Senna ligustrina (Privet Cassia). I am a butterfly gardener and use this plant as a host plant for the Cloudless Sulphur and the Orange-Barred Sulphur. It blooms much the same but without the pesky side effect of being invasive.

It may have been misapplied in Florida, but Senna bicapsularis is still an accepted name in taxonomic databases and is not listed as a synonym of S. pendula var. glabrata.

Zuzu, yeah I misunderstood what they were trying to say but once you submit a plant proposal there's no way to delete it (at least that I saw). Still, I wonder why there are no pictures in the database for Senna pendula var. glabrata when that's probably the variety people in Florida are more apt to have. If nurseries are selling it under the wrong name, naturally people will submit it under the name they bought it as.

This is probably good information to post in your Florida Forum.

In the meantime, I'll do some digging to see whether the name's being disputed anywhere else.

As for the merge tool, I'd caution against using merge proposals. The system doesn't know the correct name and won't merge name information or plant data. It moves everything to the entry with the lowest number. In this case, it would be the S. bicapsularis entry. There were no photos or comments in the other entry, so the merge would only have accomplished one thing: The entry for S. pendula var. glabrata would have been lost, name and all.

The merge tool is really useful for merging photos, comments, and owner information, but it takes a lot of preliminary work to move names, synonyms, common names, plant data, etc. It's best left to the admins. Just shoot me a tree-mail the next time you want to merge some entries.

Senna bicapsularis it the one I've grown and I have not found it to be invasive whatsoever in this part of the state. If we have consecutive freezes in the winter it can kill them.

UF says it has little invasive potential: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/st126

This page tells the difference between S. bicapsularis and S. pendula: http://keys.lucidcentral.org/k...
