Hi Barb! Sori did not see your question right away..I saw that lacewing late February..must be the drier than usual winter..my first time to see it. I usually see mantids and black widows and other arachnids.

Took this photo from across our neighbor's fence, that's as far as my cam focus can go Big Grin ...either it is a bee or a wasp..whichever it was, it seems like it is doing a tiptoe walk along the fence:

Ah...a Zebra Swallowtail! Yes, pretty! And of course, I've never seen those except in photos, since they don't come here!

As far as I can tell, the pawpaws are the only host plants used. Just like Monarchs only use milkweed species. My Monarch cats are starting to pupate, BTW!

Linda, if i have butterfly, doesn't there have to be a host plant somewhere??? This has me baffled.
It really is important for me to find out...

Charleen, maybe you have some nectar sources for your butterfly? there may be pawpaws nearby and once the caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it will seek out its nectar plants.

Here's some info on the zebra swallowtail, sorry if it's a repeat.

Then, maybe it will use another plant as a host? I know I've seen this happen before with some azalea cats that devoured a farkleberry tree... I sure was wishing I could find some wild azaleas growing nearby but I never have.

There might be pawpaws around somewhere not far away...although swallowtails are capable of flying quite some distances between areas of host plants. After I checked around, it does appear that pawpaws are native to Georgia, Charleen! You should think about growing it...the fruit sounds delicious and the butterflies would love it!
