It is misting for 3 days now, I went out to the front garden in between the rain. My flowers are still blooming and the camellias are full of buds. I found yesterday a solid white camellia but probably will not bloom this year. I have to do some moving around to make more room for the dahlias that are to close together, so it will be a fun Winter. This is Yultide, always blooms first, way before Christmas.

Do you think I can bring in my Persian shield inside and would it survive till Spring.

The camellia is lovely. I haven't had luck with Persian Shield indoors but you have nothing to lose by trying both cuttings and potted plants.

Thank you Arlene, I also have to replant 2 Clematis, plant in the place of my two roses that are not doing that great. I guess I should wait to early Spring to move them. I think they be happier on the trellis, growing high. The roses I will move to a space that gets morning sun. Guess what, I will get more room for Dahlias, to spread them out more hoping they will do better.

Kiseta, your persian shield should winter just fine indoors. Just be sure to remove any blooms that form. I even kept one in my garage overwinter.

Spring does sound like a good time to move the roses and the clematises.

That's good news! Dahlias bloom for such a long time. I still have many in bloom.

I have over wintered Persian Shield indoors under lights in the basement before. ..If I recall correctly, it just kind of sat there and barely, if at all attained any size to furnish new starts for that spring following.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

Etelka ....

I looked up 'Persian Shield' on the Proven Winners website because I had not heard of the plant ... there are a LOT of plants I've never heard of ... Rolling my eyes.

Here's a link that they give to professional growers who are propagating plugs. What I think is cool about the info is that it gives temps required for "growing out" and "holding".

https://www.provenwinners.com/...

However, keep in mind that the Proven Winners site also says that this plant should not be grown in zones below 9a. I always have a problem with that kind of info. 9a in southern California is very different than Houston, Texas or St. Augustine, Florida. There are too many variables to determine whether or not a plant is limited to just 9a.

Lyn

Thank you Lyn, I have not decided where to put the P. Shield , bought some lights and shelves, so it will be in the back bedroom that the dog uses and it is cool there. It was a slow grower that is why I wanted it to start with a large plant instead of buying small and wait again. It won't freeze here till end of Nov. Thanks again for the article. Thumbs up

I have two Persian Shield cuttings I rooted indoors now. They are growing well under lights. The color looks even better now.

My Oncidium Sharry Baby is back in bloom, compared to last year, it is a month earlier this time. So thankful for the blooms forming! For awhile, I thought I just might lose it, with the leaves getting yucky looking. But looking at it, those are the older leaves, the newer pseudobulbs where the flower spikes are coming from has good leaves. So all is well Smiling
It has three flower spikes this year, quite generous for a change, usually I only get one!

Thanks Mike! Big Grin Hilarious! Yes, I have trimmed the leaf ends a bit after I took the photo. I was also trying to observe if it is spreading, seems not. Oncidiums are just so prone to those.

Not blooming, but working on it! Crazy warm weather has my shrubs confused! They don't seem to realized that it's the middle of December!

Rose, the last photo is a magnolia ... right ?

My star magnolia starts forming those buds before the leaves drop for winter. They stay that way until April in my zone 8 garden. Unfortunately, the deer are starving due to the drought and are eating things they normally don't touch. This year they went after my magnolia ... Sad

Of course, that's nothing compared to what one doe, which managed to find a breach in the deer fence at the top of the slope, did to the house pad garden. Since it has been raining daily, she dined well on the whole house pad garden for several nights. We got a two day break in the rain and the fence has been repaired.

I am curious to see how the plants come back next spring.

As for the buds on the other plants, my experience up here has been that when we get our annual winter thaw at the end of January, the bud eyes on all of the roses swell like that and some of the roses even put out blind growth, but winter is not over. As soon as the colder temps come back, the plants stall and wait until spring's warmer temps arrive before leafing out.

Smiles,
Lyn

I've never noticed the fuzz showing on the magnolia buds until spring, but then I've never been out checking my beds the 9th of December! Making plans for shoulder surgery early 2016 so I probably won't be showing much of my garden on here next year. It's hell getting old! Sighing!

Sure is .....

I wouldn't have noticed that the buds looked like that either, except my nicely shaped shrub started looking off-balanced ... Blinking , so when I checked to see why, I saw the buds. Usually, I don't see them because they are hidden by the leaves.
