I remember fondly my brother making them from a Y-shaped branch and a strip of rubber inner tube when we were kids. Now, the inner tube has gone the way of the dodo, so I'd have to buy bungee cord, or surgical tubing. Then to find the right Y-branch . . .

I took the easy way out and ordered the $10 one off Amazon.

I like the wrist brace mine has. It uses the whole forearm as a steadying base instead of relying solely on wrist and finger muscles.

Here's the one I bought for $10 Rick. Forearm support and all. It even folds. Amazing they can produce it and ship it from you-know-where for that little. Now . .. . if only it will work!

Perfect time to practice ... Hilarious!

btw ... I have plenty of weeds growing ... Glare We didn't get our freezing night temps to knock them down. I am actually planning on spending the day weeding tomorrow. I've never done that in January before.

I used that, too. It slowed the squirrels down for a while, but my mangoes ripen over a period of about 6 weeks and they had time to develop a taste for the stuff, I guess.

Also, you wouldn't want to use it around a bird feeder, it would repel the birds too! The second time I used it, there was a little breeze, and boy did it ever make me sneeze for a while! Of course I was spraying the whole mango tree.

I really can't stand squirrels. I've tried distracting them with water and easy food...I used to have a dog and the squirrels developed a brilliant strategy where one would make a break for the garden while two kept watch from 40' up in a tree. Next I tried a blowgun, but it's really freakin hard to hit a moving squirrel with a blow gun from more than say...10'. Next I bought a Gamo Whisper pellet gun. It fires at like 1100 FPS and is the great equalizer in this fight. I killed three squirrels my first afternoon and just felt AWESOME for about a half hour.

The only problem is that I feel horrible about trying to create abundance in my yard while murdering a particular type of creature who comes to enjoy it. So now I'm experimenting with netting and other alternatives...but I've got my pellet gun ready to go if things get out of hand, lol.

Yeah, I'm with you Wayne. My yard is attractive to wildlife, and I like that. I don't want to kill the squirrels, but I think I'm making progress on 'training' them. If they stay in the catch net under the bird feeder where there is usually lots of seed, I let them be, but if they get up on the feeders, I rush out there like an avenging fury and fire my pellet gun at their fat little rumps. Mine only fires about 550 fps but it certainly gets their attention.

Luckily, my desk is right by the window looking out at the birdfeeders. Right now, out of 5 or 6 squirrels visiting, I only have one who tries the birdfeeder.

You'll never defeat them with netting. Believe me I tried, but after net, after net, upon net, upon net over a three year period, I gave up and took all the nets down. They always finally figured out a way to defeat whatever I put up. I now trap them and re-locate them 5 miles out of town. Though I have been told that they won't survive when re-located, I don't buy that. Besides, it is sure more humane than shooting them. At least I GIVE THEM A CHANCE.

The answer to squirrels getting at your feeders, homemade feeding station. 100% guaranteed has worked for me. I put seed below for the squirrels and doves so they can eat. I'm thinking of writing an article on it.

That's a neat setup, Keith. Smiling You must have a fairly good reach. I can't reach higher than the squirrels here can jump... Hilarious! ...and still, they and their chicken buddies will continue to dig up my transplants if I don't keep 'em hopping.

I just grease the pole with Super Lube on the other feeder that has a metal pole. It's fun to watch the little varmints trying to climb it and sliding down when they can't grip.

My big feeder with the net underneath is a "Squirrel Proof" one that shuts the seed ports when anything with any weight sits on the perch. So, only the little skinny squirrel can get on there and get at the seed. Lucky for me, my kids get me stuff like that for Xmas and birthday gifts, because they are Expensive!

dyzzpyxxy,
I have one of those, I purchased at Lowe's. It worked fine for years but last year one very smart and athletic squirrel was able to jump from the ground grab the feeder with one paw between the glass and the roof, hang upside down allowing him to keep his weight off the bar that closes the feeder and eat his fill of seeds. I stopped putting seeds in the feeder later because the little birds were attracting snakes. I have a suspicion that the other squirrels would soon have learned that trick, if they had the ability to jump that high.

Hilarious! Aren't they amazing! (both squirrels and the feeder) I've had one slide down the glass section like that, too. But he fell off after just a few seconds and I never saw him do it again.

You're right, I was getting a lot of black snakes around when there was all that seed on the ground, too. But I hung a metal hoop with some window screening in it, so that it catches most of the spilled seed. Now the squirrels have all that seed to feed on so they really are not that motivated to steal from the feeder, and there is less feeding on the ground so fewer snakes, too.

The "White Oak Snake" is the culprit here. The birds would fly from the feeder up to the nearby tree limbs to eat their seeds and rest inbetween. The snakes learned to hide(they blend right in with the oaks) wait on the birds and then they had a meal.
