It was a beautiful flower, Anthony. One of the best in the hall and in lovely condition. Here's another pic of it, but doesn't really do it justice:

Thumb of 2015-01-12/dellac/79217d

And a striking brown (red?); Brian Dutton benched some very distinct ryirubes - I think this is one? - from Joe Hoell's lines:

Thumb of 2015-01-12/dellac/1437bb

This one from 'Sparra's' breeding and benched by Anthony (I think!):

Unusual petal shape! But what colour would it be called?

And I loved this deep apricot with the dark back - a lily called "Joy Hawley". Joy was one of the first members of the North West Tasmanian Lilium Society, and the seed that grew this beauty came from her to Doug and Christine Fielding:

Glad everyone is enjoying the show. Hurray!

Paul, what distinction do you make between brown and red trumpets? I was following the conversation on the yahoo list and thought they were two different terms for the same colouration? But saying that, Brian Dutton showed me a photo of an incredible ryirube that Joe Hoell considered red. Absolutely stunning. Not red like roses, but definitely more red than brown to my eyes....

Don't know where Lankon went to - only one stem... maybe it had finished flowering for most people.Tangos certainly less evident this year, though Kentucky popped up a bit, and Thesire was there. A few others I can't remember the name of. Anthony benched a nice little seedling:

Thumb of 2015-01-12/dellac/f138cb Was this Oystein's?

Not alot of variety in species, either. The clone that masquerades as L. leichtlinii was plentiful, and won best species stem. Based on appearance, Judith thinks it could likely trace back to the old Citronella strain. Sorry I forgot to take a photo!

But L. longiflorum - some glorious stems that were strong contenders for best in show except that the filaments and pistil had been snipped out... I really hope our newly wiser exhibitor comes back next year and gives the boys from up north a run for their money! - abounded and a couple of L. martagon stems were there:

Thumb of 2015-01-12/dellac/7f9198

Rick, I like the many single flowers. It quite often happens that there's a stem of the same variety kicking around, to observe orientation, but not always.... It can be tricky. Sometimes a glance behind the flower at the bottle neck and pedicel reveal a flower benched upside down! Hilarious!

Anthony, If I understanding you right, this is
(White Henryi x Madame Butterfly) x (White Henryi x Madame Butterfly)
If that is correct, then technically it is not a backcross, it a F2 generation seedling.
A backcross would be your F1 generation seedling (White Henryi x Madame Butterfly) crossed with one of its parents White Henryi or Madame Butterfly).

I never crossed White Henryi x Madame Butterfly, but I did Madame Butterfly x White Henryi. Still have three or four of the best clones.

I'm lucky - I got to bring that awesome trumpet home with me! If anyone would like some pollen of Joy Hawley, send me a tree-mail. There's plenty to share. Smiling

I'm sorry I didn't get any details about that stem, nor the little red asiatic. Hopefully Anthony knows something.

I keep looking at those spoon-like petals of Sparra's seedling and wondering... just where would you go with them, breeding-wise? It's so unusual it has to go somewhere... but where Confused

Maybe upfacing but reflexed back, with or without large colour thumbprints in the middle, they could resemble an Iris....

''My Grand daughter won' Best Overall Lilium Flower' - for the "John Matthews Trophy' -- A great 'Green/ Yellow,''ST PATRICK'''Asiatic,,,, Picked at 9am on Saturday.. The Green centre was fantastic!..''

Anthony --that is absolutely terrific!! Pity Della didn't get a picture of your dial when your grand-daughter received the trophy. Hilarious!
Is that trophy by any chance Huon pine? I guess its a perpetual trophy also?
Really like your White Henryi x Madame Butterfly F2 seedling. There is so much variation to express within that class, but alas, we only have one lifetime, unless you are a Buddhist of course.
And glad to hear your asiatic caught Judith's eye , Della.

So pleased to see a Joy Hawley benched. Those that don't know it or haven't seen it at its best have missed one of life's joys Hilarious!
It has won a few Championships, both north and south and I know that in 2010 it won at Burnie with 49 buds.Íts has a beautiful strong towering stem with the much desired show tapering flower head.Nobody seems to be able to grow it like Doug and Christine Fielding and I'm happy to say that I managed to get a bulb from them maybe 10 years ago when it was still being shown as a seedling.I think it may have won the Essie Huxley trophy and I had hoped it would then be named after her. Thanks Della, I now know why it is named Joy Hawley I tip my hat to you.

Della said ''Paul, what distinction do you make between brown and red trumpets? I was following the conversation on the yahoo list and thought they were two different terms for the same colouration?
