Oh -- I just remembered one -- Stinging Nettle!!!

Many years ago, while visiting relatives in southern Indiana, I dug up what I thought was an English Bluebells plant and brought it home with me. I planted it carefully, fertilized it, watered it, weeded around it -- couldn't wait to see those beautiful blue bells. It thrived. One day I was weeding around it, and accidentally brushed my cheek against a leaf. My face immediately began to burn -- and continued to burn for a good hour, despite repeated washing of the skin.

When my Mom was over next, I told her what had happened -- and showed her the plant. She burst out laughing -- and said "Oh Mar, you haven't brought home a Bluebell -- you have brought home a Stinging Nettle". She had grown up in that area of southern Indiana, and knew all the plants in the woods. It's still a matter of hilarity in my family -- how much care I gave to that noxious weed. I must admit -- I had grown a fine speciman!!!!! Rolling my eyes.

They say you can eat nettles (cooked of course), but I think I'd have to be close to starving to even want to try and harvest them... I had some growing down by the creek. They look very similar to another wild plant in the mint family that grows here that has fragrant foliage. I went to pick some and had a rude awakening..

Yep, I remember going camping as a kid and down by the stream was stinging nettle.... Touched it several time on my legs. Ouch is right!
Also agree on puncture weed. I've been trying to get rid of it on our back hill for years.

Yup it's edible, but I haven't tried it.

Probably the same mind-set people who try to swallow live octopus without them getting stuck in the throat. Some people need a challenge.

I like spinach. Nettles, however, will forever be a flavor unknown to me. Ain't gonna try!

Ah, actually i was joining the what do you dislike thread. Any iris here has been eaten to the ground by chickens. If i am lucky enough for them to come back this year, I'm transplanting them to a safe place.
