Fine with me! But the locals do say buh-in and mau-in (glottal stops) for button and mountain.

Nevermind.
I'd better remain in familiar territory for awhile longer.
But thanks!

I just had to stop by to say HELLO to all my northern friends! Smiling Louise, I was thinking about you this summer. I was in Maine the weekend of your plant swap and if I hadn't been spending precious time with my new grandson I had even thought of driving over the border to join you! Lovey dubby Imagine my surprise when I saw your avatar - it's a little tough to see but Virginia, my clay pot lady, has the SAME tiara! Rolling on the floor laughing

Celeste, I got quite a kick out of the "Downeast Drawl tips"! Hilarious!

I agree I like to "think" the same thing but unfortunately there are a few 'southerners' who have picked up the Yankee in me since moving to VA! Big Grin

Well these two coastal ports both dropped their r sounds. I wrote a paper about it once. After the Brits arrived saying the r sound, there was a trend in England to drop r sounds in speech. Because the coastal ports did business with them, they dropped r sounds to sound British and make money. Charleston, SC, Boston, NYC, etc.

DD in Ohio says she dropped the eastern MA acent except for the name Martha i.e. Matha & can't seem to put the r in the name. I am from the midwest so don't have this eastern stuff except one can pick it up. I have to be careful how I say Gloucester. The 'r' is on the end but the middle sounds Bostonish.
My mother (from Omaha) went to school north of Boston & I can remember as a child her chuckles when someone asked her for directions to the Bawston Store. She gave directions & walked along chuckling Bawston Store to herself. I didn't understand the joke at that time.

Ouch! What happened to your hand Louise? I can type but have also been "cut off from all meaningful endeavors" for six weeks now with a severely sprained ankle. Grumbling Fortunately I've used the 'free' time to knit a few things for my new grandson and the girls over the Garden Art forum have been keeping me busy as well while I'm 'disabled'. Big Grin
