The two camellias on the south side of the house are quite old...they get the winter rain, of course, but they get no other water...not last summer, not this summer. They've not suffered at all.....too bad I don't like them.....

We have lots of camellia's at our new house. They are definitely champs in the drought! Though I've gotta' say that the old roses are a close second.

I have been away for the past 3 months... and missed all your good messages, but thanks. Now my first Camellia (Sasanqua 'Mondel') has passed the hot summer and come to the blooming season. Sadly, only about 9 scarce buds are found in the plant full of leaves... I went back to the nursery I bought it and found their same camellias were all full with big buds, some even already bloomed! Asking the people about the problem, it (they claimed) turned out regular fert (4 times a yr) is needed for the best bloom... I wondered, but plan to do it next year. Any input? Thanks

I doubt that my two have ever in their lives been fertilized, but they're in the ground and they're very old.....

Hi, Fiat. Welcome back. Sorry I can't help you with your fertilizer question. I've never fertilized my camellias, but then I've never grown one in a container either.

Wow! Sherry. Your Camellias look like "Mother of thousands"! LOL I wish mine had half buds of yours. It will be a marvelous sight of their blooming.

Zuzu, It's ok. I'll see how it goes next year after this first (poor) bloom season. But I surely like to have a taste of the smell when it blooms (wish me luck).

Finally but my first Mondel Camellia flower opens fully today!
Thumb of 2015-12-02/fiat/88eb6f
It surely looks (closely) gracefully beautiful but a bit small in size. And it does give a hint of subtle sweet fragrance Hurray! I counted the buds on the plant: only a dozen... and they seem not like to bloom all at the same time... Well, like Liz said I hope my Camellia " the first year, it sleeps; the second year it creeps; the third year, it leaps." But I am not disappointed that I actually enjoy its beauty and fragrance though in scarce this first year.

I heard the Sasangua 'Mondel' is probably the only Camellia which bloom fragrant. That's why I decided to grow one. But if you know anyelse, please let me know. Tks

Sherry, Thanks for the link. That site does indicate 'many' fragrant camellia cultivars, but guess not many of them are of commercial availability. Any way, it surely a sweet joy to smell a wonderful scent from this 'tea flower'.

Hi Tarev, It is nice keeper and I plan to keep and grow it to 10' for long long time Rolling my eyes.

I know...I look at it as a single bloom / photo and I like it. It's the placement of the shrub I have a problem with . There are two camellias and they are planted a few feet from each other, both being eye-catchers, by the house....with nothing else around them. I would prefer to have them separate mixed in with other green shrubs, but, well, there they are, kinda just sticking out. They're still there, thought I would pull them out right away...maybe I can work with or around them, depending on what we do with the house there...

Sherry, Very pretty and nice camellia bloom! Are they fragrant? They look different from the pic you posted last year? -- much more beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
