Kirstein,

I find you need a range of micro-habitats. Think about the species around you and note where they like to hide in and what they breed in and what they like to eat.

For example, large sized mulch pieces are good for a variety of small lizards to hide under. Don't think 'neat' for a garden.

I grow mainly daylilies, native plants and fruit and vegetables but I leave piles of mulch and several old logs about. I have a seed feeder and, more importantly, sources of water. I am also helped by there being uncleared blocks about with very large trees. However, this is changing as people build near by. If you are in suburbia, look at some of the insect motels you can make - these can attract pollinators. All my trees are native and big nectar producers which attracts honeyeaters. My fruit trees also attract many native bird species. I am about to get some nest boxes for parrots and ducks. It is important these are lined so young can climb up the sides. A fiend of mine had a large box installed for parrots but wood ducks bred in it. She had to hire a cherry-picker to rescue the ducklings when they hatched - they couldn't get out.

The Bearded Dragon in the picture is a young male. He crosses a dirt road to get to my garden. Undoubtedly it is the flowers of the violets I use as a ground cover that are attracting him. That species is also keen on eating insects and I always seem to have good populations of grasshoppers.

I am starting a pond this year for the native frogs. They will bread in water containers in your garden but a larger feature is easier to maintain. I am also looking to get a native bee hive.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Oh Happy Day! A Lizard forum!
I love lizards. Really enjoyed the Bearded Dragon photos, Gleni. I had a pair of them in captivity for many years (Max and Lizzie). Wouldn't do that today as I prefer all "pets" to be of the outdoor variety. But I do have lots of lizards: anoles, Texas Spiny Swifts, skinks, Mediterranean geckos, and Texas Spotted Whiptails. I adore them, but I have a friend who doesn't. She calls them "Snake Bait". I think they're wonderful for insect control, and I enjoy watching them. Especially when they do their "display and push-up" routine.
These two photos were taken about ten seconds apart.

Hi Aria, Hats off to you for wanting to share your gardening with your son. The rewards of doing that will be huge! There's a lot to learn - and it's best learned by doing. Don't ever get discouraged! Keep on playing in the dirt and having fun with your little one.

I know what you mean Ann. Yesterday he walked over to my neighbour's yard. I was worried how they would react. But they loved him too!

Love, love, love the bearded dragon!!! But don't think one would survive in my climate. And I have no papaya blossoms. However, I won't be too sad because I have the beautiful Texas Spiny Swift, which is a master of camouflage.

Thx they are soooo cute and tiny!!! I have found eggs in flower pots that are either these little fellas or the blue tailed skinks around here. I just put them back so they are not disturbed.
