In photos Maria looked very similar to Jetfire and Itzim. Do you grow either of those? I'm curious how they compare. Both Jetfire and Itzim are very vigorous for me- there is still a bunch of Jetfire in the lawn that bloom in spite of being mowed down too soon.

We dug up most of the front lawn that was purple violets. My son moved all my precious violets to the evergreen garden and we planted mostly iris where the violet lawn had been. There were a number of non-blooming daff bulbs that got moved. The property was purchased from England in 1770, so who knows? So far, I have only found common yellow daffs.
Don't make fear based decisions.

I have some Itzim. But only planted 25 of them. I don't think they have really multiplied but not sure. Maria does look similar but the flower maybe is bigger and the trumpet more intense orange. It is a truly stunning daffodil.

It would be really interesting if you had old historic daffs there. Thumbs up

Linnea, I'd love to see pics of your Daffs when they bloom. I'm curious what heirloom they may be. So many that I have always thought common, are actually rare in commerce.

Rita, I found Jetfire to have a deeper orange cup than itzim, but about the same size flower and more prolific. They bloom really early too, one of the first here.

I think the Itzim would bloom much earlier if they were in a spot that the sun hit sooner. Shady there. Well, somewhat shady.

Evening all--here are a few miniature daffodil seedlings of mine.Btw, this style of daffodil would suit those with only a small space to garden, like a balcony or courtyard. They do well in pots, so if you are less mobile, give them a thought.

Those are really precious! I love cyclamineus types, and the little ones have a particular wildflowery grace that makes them so special. In past years the late blooming minis were tough for me because that is when the garden is getting really lush. I almost lost some because they were overwhelmed with growth of neighboring plants, but I've been keeping the space clear around them the last couple of years and they're rebounding.

Vanozzi, how long does it take them to bloom from seed? I'm assuming minis are a bit quicker than larger ones?

G'day Neal, yes you are correct.Miniatures usually take only 3 years from seed to bloom, whereas standards take 5 to 7 years. However, if you sow seed each year, eventually there are swags of new seedlings blooming--you never think about the wait.
I read where you appreciate white Div 1selfs (Div 1 W-W), but bemoan you aren't getting any.If you like the white trumpets, Div 1, and have a few, why not invest in some smooth white large cups,Div 2, and breed some of your own. Those that like your conditions, will thrive, those that don't will cark it.
Also, you should be able to get a magnificent Div 2 Y-Y, called Gold Convention. It is such a healthy strong daffodil that does well the world over, despite your patch. It also does well on the show bench and is a proven breeder. And it's cheap!! You would get some nice seedlings if you used it.Btw, in case you don't know , daffodils are self fertile.
Comon--it's time you went to seed !
Here is another of my seedlings

I adore that last one Vanozzi! But then I can easily say I adore all the others you've posted photos of above. So sweet, dainty & charming.

That seedling is gorgeous!

Hmmm...hybridizing would be fun, I may have to play with that a bit. I have some picked out to add this fall, and will soon have a better gene pool to work with. Seems the nice white large cups bloom late- can the pollen be frozen for a year?

I'm captivated by the yellow/pink bicolors. Here is a new one for me, Blushing Lady, followed by Billy Graham.

Another white trumpet from Old House Gardens, Broughshane, has opened. It is more elegant and refined than I was expecting- love it!

Also new for me this year, Sweet Love and Loth Lorien.

Blushing Lady, Loth Lorien, Mrs. Backhouse, & Pinza are my favorites form that bunch. Broughshane really fits your description of elegant. Totally.
