I have this plant. It is called Lion's Tail. I couldn't find it in the plant database. Is it there by another name? Or, I just overlooked it? Thx, Lynne

Lion's Tail (Leonotis leonurus)

Whether right or wrong many people using the common names get the Lion's Ear and the Lion's Tail mixed up. Lot's of misinformation on the web about these two plants. I try to remember that one is perennial and on is an annual.

I see on one of the links you provided that they are calling it Leonotis ocymifolia/formerly Leonotis leonurus/Lion's Tail; the other link you provided calls it Leonotis leonurus/Lion's Ear.

In the ATP database they list Leonotis ocymifolia/Lion's Tail, while Catalogue of Life lists Leonotis ocymifolia as an accepted name, not the same plant as Leonotis leonurus.

I love this plant; I have two -- one each side of an arbor. I haven't had any luck though in rooting cuttings. Any advice -- root in water or dab on rootone and put right in the potting mix; or put in perlite with rooting powder ? I never seem to get to the little seed pods in time and never find baby plants on the ground.

I'll check my earthbox. I bought one several years ago for tomatoes and now use it for cuttings. I stuck some lions tail in there last fall. Will check tomorrow and see if they are still there. It's pretty full of cuttings and plants I pull up.

Leonotis nepetifolia self seeds occasionally here. The Leonotis l. I have to purchase from an outlet, it's a one time bloomer here if ground planted. Not familiar w/ the Leonotis m. designation. The Leonotis l. variety can have some hallucinatory properties if given the right conditions to grow. Reputedly used like marijuana in Africa.
It certainly is a neat plant (either of the two I'm familiar with). L. nepetifolia gets up to maybe 10 ft, the other, only waist high.

I just bought the dwarf version of Lion's Ear! I have the large one, Leonotis leonurus , growing in very little soil atop limestone rock. It blooms faithfully in October and dies back with first freeze. Hope the dwarf version does as well.

Where did you find lion's ear? I've not ever seen it in a nursery.

Orchidgal: I stuck some Lion's Tail cuttings in my earthbox last fall and I checked this morning and they are about 8" tall. I love my earthbox. It has a water reservoir at the bottom so is great for cuttings where it's so easy to forget to water. I just stripped off the bottom leaves and stuck in in there. Good luck.
