My LPP didn't survive for some reason. I got it as a plug, and potted it up...and it kept turning brown and the leaves got thinner and thinner until they were like onion skin. So weird. The grower I got it from offered me another as soon as the ones she potted up are a little bigger. I'm just not sure what went wrong with this one.

I heard that Walter's (which is where the grower got my LPP) used some sort of special paper pot in the past that was supposed to allow them to pot up seedlings without removing the paper. There's a thread about it on Hallson's. Unfortunately, the experiment was disastrous because the paper pots didn't deteriorate like they were supposed to. Instead, they kept the roots compacted. So the plants would look fine for a while, and then suddenly start wasting away because their root structure was unable to expand. Not sure if that was the case with my LPP, but I've learned that from now on I will plant everything bare root if possible. I'll wash and soak roots and try to get them as clean as I can.

Karen, is there any chance you can provide a link to the discussion about Walters? I buy a lot of my plugs there, and have had quite a bit of problems with the new paper pots not deteriorating. I'd love to read the discussion. I finally determined to peel the pots right off.

It's covered in this thread:

http://www.perennialnursery.co...

I'm told they stopped using the paper pots, or are using a different material now, but plants purchased last year or earlier might still be affected.
