My Christopher M. is really gone. I found mushy roots, no crown to be seen. A bonus plant Petal Pushers was the same way.

A couple dls have not sprouted but I dug down and the crowns looked ok, so I will be leaving those alone.

I feel really bad because I lost my first daylily to winter this year. Not the first one I bought, but it was the first time I lost one. It was an older one, Jerry Pate Williams, but I sure did love it! But, it was old and cheap when I bought it, unlike some of the ones that all of you have lost. Sad Hopefully you can find replacements. I'll pick up another Jerry Pate Williams the next time I'm in Utah. The little nursery there has always had it, and I think I only paid $5 for it. So, not a major loss.

Are daylilies not as hardy as they once were?

In a week, I'm sending plants to Montana, zone 3.
Tried to pick out what I thought would be the toughest ones; hopefully,
there won't be a bunch of added obituaries listed here in a year.

(Although in Florida, zone 9a, I do have a fair amount of dormant daylilies)

I am thinking that I may have lost several this year, but I can't tell for sure yet as it's still early here for them to be up. I had a pen pal in S.C. who was going to move to Denver so she sent me over 50 of her favs two years ago. Many limped along last year, and I think they are just not meant for my zone.

Pat,

I think some of the winter losses ( like many of mine). Are a combination of hardiness and when they were planted ( time to establish roots)

You would think I would have learned by now NOT to buy and plant in the fall.......but I am weak to Maryott's weekly sale/ bonus pants late summer *Blush* Shrug!

You are right Lisa. I have learned over the years that fall planting doesn't work here in Michigan. I lost too many that way. I always plant in the spring now.

Ive said this before, l consider a daylily an annual, if it makes it two years are more, Im thrilled. Im better at taking are of them thru the hot summer and that has helped alot. Mine dont so much die, as just fade away.

gardenglory,
Any ideas on why the daylilies only last such a short while? Two years is a very short life for a daylily .

I think its a combination of care. I admit in the heat of the summer with water being so expensive, if it doesnt rain, I dont always water. I also think the weather conditions have alot to do with it heat/cold. Some just dont seem to like the south, and from what I read...alot are not fond of the north. I keep peddling tho... nodding

So far Breakfast With Santa has not shown up. It was new last year and planted late spring. Like Claudia, my Last Snowflake took awhile to break ground. I didn't move mine.

Decided to dig in the spot where Jerry Pate Williams is planted. Was very surprised to find the roots and crown, and they looked perfect. Nothing at all mushy. The only thing missing was foliage. Otherwise, they looked totally healthy. I lifted the fans some and put them back. Maybe it is in a coma or something, and will surprise me and wake up and start growing. Normally, the last one to start growing for me is Gerda Brooker. Every year, I think I've lost it, but every year, it has grown. It just gets a much later start than the rest, and it has been growing for at least a month now. JPW has always come up with the rest of them. Confused Hopefully it will survive!

I lost my large clump of Hillbilly Heart two winters ago, when temps got down to zero. This past winter I lost a couple dozen in pots, including Blazing Saddles ( a favorite) and nine new ones I got from Maryott last spring. I planted my Baja California (overwintered in a large pot for a year) in a new bed last September and heavily mulched it. BC and the other nine daylilies I planted there all came back well this spring.

Goodness, Debra that is a lot of daylilies to lose! I am glad that Baja C. did pull thru for you. Will you be going to the Regional 10 meeting?

Was checking the garden again yesterday and I think I lost Archaeoptyrx. It survived two winters here but I guess last winter was the last straw for this one.

I grow most of mine in pots. 2013-2014 winter I lost about 40% of the potted ones to an unusually cold winter (down to zero). This year I lost none. Since most that are here this spring were those that had made it through the bad winter the year before, I take that as a sign that they are fairly winter hardy regardless of their designation of Sev or Ev. A few, such as Santa's Little Helper (Ev-Trimmer) needed a warmer more sheltered position to overwinter outside, but it did manage to hang in there both of these winters.......Maryl

I think I also lost a Hellebore, and it was one I have had for about 10 years.

Had to edit this to add 2 more losses. Lost Buddy's Victoria Jade and Raspberry Frost. Both came from Florida last spring.
