Quite well.
Thanks for asking....LOL!

It's actually a Bromeliad (Air Plant) and we just drape it over a plastic hanger come winter.
Hang in an area w/ some sun and nice air flow.
Once a week or so spray it or soak w/ non chlorinated water.
It will turn from silver/gray to silver/green then as it dries back to s/g.
About once a month we add a very small amount of fert. to the water.
We have had some going for years now.
Come Summer hang it (out of direct noon and late sun) out in the yard.
Nature usually takes care of the rest.

Here's how I winter over my tropicals. Not the "prettiest" greenhouse, but it does the trick and I can putter around in there without ever going outside through a door from our gameroom.
I've re-read the tutorial on growing the alocacia stem. Still not sure....is it the tuber attached to the stem, or just the stem that roots???

Ok..............I did not take the time to do the whole procedure, but I'm sure you will figure out what it is I do when you see the pic. I have trouble putting more than one photo on a post, so I will make 2 posts.

The is the whole stem...............

I will cut the stem where I have made the long black mark on it..........was hard to do with a skinny plant tag pen. LOL Then I will lay it lenghwise in one of those long planters. Put the medium about halfway up on the stem. I tried to mark one of the "nubbies" where a new plant will grow..............*eventually*.......... No matter if there are nubbies under the soil or above; they seem to grow equally well for me. NOW is it clear what I do? Oh, and I will just stick the parent plant back in some soil and it will keep growing.

The stem of the Alocasia is the tuber. In places where Alocasia is used as a vegetable (South Pacific) the stems are what's sold and eaten. It's the Colocasias and some other aroids that have the underground tubers.

Well, I guess I didn't realize WHAT to call it. Stem just sounded appropriate. "Them big plant stem-y things" didn't seem right. Green Grin! But, now, I hope you have the idea of my "procedure".

That explains why on pics of big old tropical grown Colocasia and Xanthosoma there's no stem/tuber.

Henryr10 said:Larger bulbs generally give you a faster start but also, in my experience, rot easier.

I've probably mentioned it before but we winter many of our EE's, Macro, Odora, etc bare root.
Just yank them out of the ground or pot and throw them on the GH floor.
These have stems about 3" across or so.
Once the roots dry out I trim them off, never wash them.

Ric, I just noticed the comment ..."never wash them." Is this all your EE's, Alos, Colocasia, ...? The reason I ask is several years ago while lifting callas (in the rain) during a very muddy autumn I washed them off before drying. I noticed they dried faster (in the basement on tables). I've mostly washed them off since, Callas, C. esculenta and this year the Xanths. Is there a specific concern?

I don't wash them as I have very little drying space w/ good air flow.
So I'm afraid of rot.
I just wipe them off and then after the dirt dries brush them off.
I do this w/ all bulbs, tubers, etc and bare roots.
If I'm shipping I wash them off w/ a very very mild beach water bath.
Then dust w/ fungicide.

Hi Ric, I'll have to try that next time I see rot. This fall was so wet I found rot on a few Callas and Amorphophallus konjac tubers. All were grown in ground. So much for thinking about trying to zone push A. konjac. I've never used a fungicide before. Are they all pretty much the same? Sorry for the pestering questions but how dilute on the bleach solution? I think the bearded Iris people say about 10:1, but not sure.

I got to wondering and spent some time checking tubers/corms today. So far so good.
