Rosie... Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Any project that involves dealing with rocks is a LOT of work!

How did you clear the weeds and stuff out of your wooded areas? I have a project on the back burner that involves wooded areas and adding native plants, but I need to do something about the grass and weeds that are growing there now. Roundup? Smother with cardboard? Dig it all out the "old-fashioned way" ? I'm really impressed by what you've done, makes me want to come there and sit on that bench... Smiling

I hoed and raked the weeds out of another section of the veggie garden, plus got all the asparagus stalks cut down (I don't remember it being as big a job as it seemed today!); DH is nearly finished with the base for the new greenhouse, in a couple of days we should be starting the actual building Hurray! .

No digging or major garden work as we are in horrible drought and ground is too hard. But I did watch the monarchs in my yard, must be migrating through here.

I hope your drought will end soon, Judy! Otherwise -- watching Monarchs would be a nice way to spend the day Smiling .

Sandy...my SIL ran it thru with something attached to the lawnmower.....cleaning it up and loosening ..then we just dug it up once the top side was cleared somewhat. Those rocks were a huge strain and pain but prevented lots of roots so that was good. You can see tho the trees were far apart and the large equip could have clear access

Maybe something like a "thatcher" ? We have one of those that we use every few years to kind of freshen up the lawn. But, where I want to plant that won't work, couldn't get the mower in there very well; maybe I'll just kind of beat it up with the rototiller and then finish cleaning it out with a hoe and rake. Not happening this fall, at any rate... I'll have to think about it over the winter Shrug!

We used a tiller at our house...in a natural area.. we hit a few roots that I have a feeling will come back to haunt us.. but yes it does help to loosen.

Crazy work..temptation great to bring in fill dirt...but the trees and their roots may not like that heavy covering

My "potting bench" is a wheelbarrow with a steel-wire-shelf laid on top. I use that for screening bark, too.

My other potting bench is my kitchen table.

Heck, I have all those "benches". Oversized wheelbarrow, 5 gal buckets (lots of these), garden cart (hand-powered), garden cart (lawn-tractor pulled), and two hand-made work benches in the greenhouses (they look handmade if you know what I mean *Blush* ). Then there are the two cabinets in the solarium, one for storage and arranging stuff and the other with the large sink. You would think I could keep at least one of these "benches" clean and neat..........nope. Blinking

nodding nodding nodding I have 3 different garden carts, 2 are hand powered and the 1 goes behind the mower, I store stuff in 2 of them (1 has a flat tire) and use the hand powered one (I call it my little green cart) to move rocks and mix soil amendments, but mostly use the JD Gator for everything else. Got shelves for the garage just for my gardening "stuff" (can't find anything Whistling Whistling ) and finally have all the tools put away neatly. And then there is the basement garage that needs a tornado to go through and clean it out - that was supposed to be my gardening room but just hasn't quite made it there yet - I'd rather work in the yard than clean out and arrange a room Whistling Whistling Blinking Blinking

but after all the clearing and shoveling this old body did in Pa..I am all worn out...the tweezer was too heavy!

I helped build that rock wall fri and saturday IN THE RAIN...and shoveled the dirt to backfill it..and there were rocks in that mountain of dirt!

Put in pussywillow,, pieris, windflower, dwarf hydrangea, rhododendron, tall and low mophead cypress, coral bells, amsonia, jap maple, yard art, wind chimes..., all in virgin wooded areas... does not look like much but was a lot! It was all weeds and grass..no cleared area. You can see by the plantings in front of the house that the kids are not exactly researching ..everything died..lavender is wild..., maples drowned ..astilbe LIVED..( (I can't keep it alive! ) so now the planting areas I created in front of the house need planting...AFTER WE replace wooden steps with stone... next spring maybe....ugh...

I have an (almost) actual potting bench, which was some kind of cabinet/dresser that was in our garage when we bought our house in 1990; heavy (!) wood, with 6 drawers (which don't work all that well)... we did replace the top with a bargain countertop remnant, but I think I need to do something different with that as the particle board has absorbed too much moisture and is getting pretty funky. But, because the potting bench is in my greenhouse, during the summer I will use an old piece of Masonite siding laid across the top of my garden cart, and in the late winter and early spring (when I'm sowing seeds in flats) I sometimes use our workshop... and sometimes the kitchen counter Sticking tongue out Whistling . Hey, it's just good clean dirt, right?
