I think they like cold winters. The also like their feet shaded and steady moisture. I usually find at least on hummingbird nest in them after the leaves fall off.

Mine can take hot summers but have to be growing where their roots are shaded. I tell new growers to keep the plants face in the sun and feet in the shade.

And that's a very hard thing to do Bonnie. Mine bloom real well in the Spring and up until about now. From July on -- they're toast. Poor things still come back and try again the next year.

Try heavily mulching the roots and using smaller plants to shade the lowest part the plant. Also, if they can be planted on the east side of a low wall, fence or even a building they will get plenty of morning sun and be protected from the afternoon sun.
