Update on my seven little plants. This week I observed that most have developed a third leaf. Slowly but surely they are growing.

@greene -- how long did it take from the root sprouting until you got that third leaf?
I have a bunch of seeds I have sprouted this summer - so far just one leaf. Just wondering.

@greene that is interesting. How are you getting them to grow so fast? What kind of soil did you put them in, how much sun, any fertilizer? Mine sprouted before yours but only have 1 leaf each. Confused

@greene, I shared my seeds with StanviewGardner, who also floated them in water, but about a month after mine. @StanviewGardner, how many leaves do you have on your sprouts, and what are your growing conditions? Perhaps I need to move mine into the sun? I was afraid they would bake, but maybe not. They are a cross I made: Picote x Naranja. I also just started some Mandonni seeds - those I purchased. It would be nice if I could get them all to grow faster since they are going to take so long to get big enough to bloom.

So fast? It has taken a year for them to get this far. Hilarious!
I always start things in straight Vermiculite with zero fertilizer. If my plants cannot thrive on neglect then they can go live with a rich person. Rolling on the floor laughing
About a month ago I top dressed with some compost (homemade stuff) and that's when the third leaves started to appear.

What kind of sun? I started them in 'bright shade'. When I moved to the new place all the plants got rearranged and these ended up in part sun/part shade. They are under a huge oak tree, get bright shade until about 1 or 2 pm, then full sun until about 6 pm.

ohhhhhhhh duh. Sticking tongue out I see they sprouted in 2015 - I read that wrong. OK, feeling much better and on track now. I do think I will move mine from shade to bright shade though - that sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of making some compost tea for them, that should not be too strong for them. Thanks for clearing that up for me -- I hope the 3 of us can stay in touch with our seedlings so we can compare their progress - and any one else who is sprouting them right now -- there is not really that much information out there on the requirements for Hippeastrum seedlings. I'm glad we have this thread! Rolling my eyes.

If you look for videos by Charlie Johnston you can learn quite a bit.
Start by checking out this video, then look to the right side of the screen to see others made by Charlie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

It's still a good idea to get answers from more than one person; what works for Charlie Johnston may not work for everyone or for every climate zone.

Hope we all have success with our experiments. It will take several years but the blooms will be rewarding. Thumbs up

Only time will tell.....
After reading 3 pages, there is a cliff-hanger! Has no succeeded? I'm dying to know! My father-in-law gave me a bulb and about 50 seeds to play around with. No clue what color any of these are or what they look like, but I did manage to get a single healthy leaf on the bulb. I am going to try germinating the seeds next spring so I migrated to this forum. Would be awesome to have an update...
